먼저 대수적 방법을 써서 (극한을 정확히 계산하여) 구하려고 노력하고, 그다음 수치적 근거(작은 hh 의 값)로 그 결과를 검증하고, 마지막으로 (a,f(a))(a,f(a)) 근처에서 y=f(x)y = f(x) 의 그래프를 알맞은 접선과 함께 그려서 f′(a)f'(a) 의 값을 시각적으로 어림하세요.

(a) f(x)=x2−3xf(x) = x^2 - 3x, a=2a = 2 (b) f(x)=1xf(x) = \frac{1}{x}, a=1a = 1 (c) f(x)=xf(x) = \sqrt{x}, a=1a = 1 (d) f(x)=2−∣x−1∣f(x) = 2 - |x-1|, a=1a = 1 (e) f(x)=sin⁡(x)f(x) = \sin(x), a=π2a = \frac{\pi}{2}

The goal of this problem is to compute the value of the derivative at a point for several different functions, where for each one we do so in three different ways, and then to compare the results to see that each produces the same value.

For each of the following functions, use the limit definition of the derivative to compute the value of f′(a)f'(a) using three different approaches: strive to use the algebraic approach first (to compute the limit exactly), then test your result using numerical evidence (with small values of hh), and finally plot the graph of y=f(x)y = f(x) near (a,f(a))(a,f(a)) along with the appropriate tangent line to estimate the value of f′(a)f'(a) visually. Compare your findings among all three approaches; if you are unable to complete the algebraic approach, still work numerically and graphically.

(a) f(x)=x2−3xf(x) = x^2 - 3x, a=2a = 2 (b) f(x)=1xf(x) = \frac{1}{x}, a=1a = 1 (c) f(x)=xf(x) = \sqrt{x}, a=1a = 1 (d) f(x)=2−∣x−1∣f(x) = 2 - |x-1|, a=1a = 1 (e) f(x)=sin⁡(x)f(x) = \sin(x), a=π2a = \frac{\pi}{2}

f(1+h)−f(1)h=[2−∣(1+h)−1∣]−2h=(2−∣h∣)−2h=−∣h∣h\begin{aligned}\frac{f(1+h)-f(1)}{h} &= \frac{[2-|(1+h)-1|] - 2}{h} \\ &= \frac{(2-|h|)-2}{h} \\ &= \frac{-|h|}{h}\end{aligned}
f(1+h)−f(1)h=−∣h∣h=−hh=−1\frac{f(1+h)-f(1)}{h} = \frac{-|h|}{h} = -\frac{h}{h} = -1
이고, h<0h < 0 일 때
f(1+h)−f(1)h=−∣h∣h=−−hh=1 .\frac{f(1+h)-f(1)}{h} = \frac{-|h|}{h} = -\frac{-h}{h} = 1\,. 이로써 lim⁡h→0f(1+h)−f(1)h\lim_{h \to 0} \frac{f(1+h)-f(1)}{h} 이 존재하지 않음이 확인된다.
(e) 다음 표의 자료는 h→0h \to 0 일 때 f(π2+h)−f(π2)h\frac{f(\frac{\pi}{2}+h)-f(\frac{\pi}{2})}{h} 가 00 에 가까워짐을 나타낸다.

f(π2+h)−f(π2)h=sin⁡(π2+h)−sin⁡π2h=sin⁡(π2+h)−1h\begin{aligned}\frac{f(\frac{\pi}{2}+h)-f(\frac{\pi}{2})}{h} &= \frac{\sin(\frac{\pi}{2}+h) - \sin \frac{\pi}{2}}{h} \\ &= \frac{\sin(\frac{\pi}{2}+h) - 1}{h}\end{aligned}
sin⁡(π2+h)=sin⁡π2cos⁡(h)+cos⁡π2sin⁡(h)=1⋅cos⁡(h)+0⋅sin⁡(h)=cos⁡(h) .\sin(\frac{\pi}{2}+h) = \sin \frac{\pi}{2} \cos(h) + \cos \frac{\pi}{2} \sin(h) = 1 \cdot \cos(h) + 0 \cdot \sin(h) = \cos(h)\,. 따라서
f′(π2)=lim⁡h→0f(π2+h)−f(π2)h=lim⁡h→0cos⁡(h)−1h\begin{aligned}f'(\frac{\pi}{2}) &= \lim_{h \to 0} \frac{f(\frac{\pi}{2}+h)-f(\frac{\pi}{2})}{h} \\ &= \lim_{h \to 0} \frac{\cos(h) - 1}{h}\end{aligned}

The graph of ff in the figure below appears to show a sharp corner at the point (1,f(1))(1,f(1)), also implying that there is no tangent line to ffat (1,f(1))(1,f(1)).
![A plot of f(x) = 2- x-1 on the interval 0.2 lt x lt 1.8 with a focus on the point (1,2) on the graph. The function has a sharp corner at the point (1,2).](activecalc/1_3_Ez4d_soln.svg)
Now we verify these approximations using an algebraic approach. Notice first that
f(1+h)−f(1)h=[2−∣(1+h)−1∣]−2h=(2−∣h∣)−2h=−∣h∣h\begin{aligned}\frac{f(1+h)-f(1)}{h} &= \frac{[2-|(1+h)-1|] - 2}{h} \\ &= \frac{(2-|h|)-2}{h} \\ &= \frac{-|h|}{h}\end{aligned}
The definition of the absolute value function tells us that ∣h∣=h|h| = h whenever h≥0h \ge 0, while ∣h∣=−h|h| = -h whenever h<0h < 0. Thus, for h>0h > 0, we have
f(1+h)−f(1)h=−∣h∣h=−hh=−1\frac{f(1+h)-f(1)}{h} = \frac{-|h|}{h} = -\frac{h}{h} = -1
and for h<0h < 0, we have
f(1+h)−f(1)h=−∣h∣h=−−hh=1 .\frac{f(1+h)-f(1)}{h} = \frac{-|h|}{h} = -\frac{-h}{h} = 1\,. This confirms that lim⁡h→0f(1+h)−f(1)h\lim_{h \to 0} \frac{f(1+h)-f(1)}{h} does not exist.
(e) The data in the following table indicate that f(π2+h)−f(π2)h\frac{f(\frac{\pi}{2}+h)-f(\frac{\pi}{2})}{h} approaches 00 as h→0h \to 0.

The graph of ff in the figure below shows a horizontal tangent line at the point (π2,f(π2))(\frac{\pi}{2},f(\frac{\pi}{2})), which also suggests that f′(π2)=0f'(\frac{\pi}{2}) = 0.
A plot of f(x) = sin(x) on the interval -1.5 lt x lt 6.5 with a focus on the point ( frac pi 2 ,1) on the curve. The graph has a hump at x = frac pi 2 and thus a horizontal tangent line at that x-valu
Finally, we attempt to verify these approximations using an algebraic approach. Notice first that
f(π2+h)−f(π2)h=sin⁡(π2+h)−sin⁡π2h=sin⁡(π2+h)−1h\begin{aligned}\frac{f(\frac{\pi}{2}+h)-f(\frac{\pi}{2})}{h} &= \frac{\sin(\frac{\pi}{2}+h) - \sin \frac{\pi}{2}}{h} \\ &= \frac{\sin(\frac{\pi}{2}+h) - 1}{h}\end{aligned}
Using the sum of two angles identity for the sine function, it follows that
sin⁡(π2+h)=sin⁡π2cos⁡(h)+cos⁡π2sin⁡(h)=1⋅cos⁡(h)+0⋅sin⁡(h)=cos⁡(h) .\sin(\frac{\pi}{2}+h) = \sin \frac{\pi}{2} \cos(h) + \cos \frac{\pi}{2} \sin(h) = 1 \cdot \cos(h) + 0 \cdot \sin(h) = \cos(h)\,. Hence,
f′(π2)=lim⁡h→0f(π2+h)−f(π2)h=lim⁡h→0cos⁡(h)−1h\begin{aligned}f'(\frac{\pi}{2}) &= \lim_{h \to 0} \frac{f(\frac{\pi}{2}+h)-f(\frac{\pi}{2})}{h} \\ &= \lim_{h \to 0} \frac{\cos(h) - 1}{h}\end{aligned}
At this point, we encounter a limit that we are unable to evaluate further using algebraic means. Like the earlier limit above, we can estimate the limit using small values of hh. Doing so confirms that this limit also approaches 00, and we hence conclude that f′(π2)=0f'(\frac{\pi}{2}) = 0.
