When an aircraft attempts to climb as rapidly as possible, its climb rate (in feet per minute) decreases as altitude increases, because the air is less dense at higher altitudes. Given below is a table showing performance data for a certain single engine aircraft, giving its climb rate at various altitudes, where c(h)c(h) denotes the climb rate of the airplane at an altitude hh.

hh (feet) 00 10001000 20002000 30003000 40004000 50005000 60006000 70007000 80008000 90009000 10,00010{,}000

Let a new function called m(h)m(h) measure the number of minutes required for a plane at altitude hh to climb the next foot of altitude.

(a) Determine a similar table of values for m(h)m(h) and explain how it is related to the table above. Be sure to explain the units. (b) Give a careful interpretation of a function whose derivative is m(h)m(h). Describe what the input is and what the output is. Also, explain in plain English what the function tells us. (c) Determine a definite integral whose value tells us exactly the number of minutes required for the airplane to ascend to 10,000 feet of altitude. Clearly explain why the value of this integral has the required meaning. (d) Use the Riemann sum M5M_5 to estimate the value of the integral you found in (c). Include units on your result.

(a) 주어진 상승률 c(h)c(h) 의 단위는 피트/분이고, 새 함수 m(h)m(h) 의 단위는 분/피트이므로 m(h)m(h) 는 c(h)c(h) 의 역수이다. 즉 m(h)=1c(h)m(h) = \frac{1}{c(h)} 이다.

mm (분/피트) 1925\frac{1}{925} 1875\frac{1}{875} 1830\frac{1}{830} 1780\frac{1}{780} 1730\frac{1}{730} 1685\frac{1}{685} 1635\frac{1}{635} 1585\frac{1}{585} 1535\frac{1}{535} 1490\frac{1}{490} 1440\frac{1}{440}
M=∫010000m(h) dhM = \int_{0}^{10000} m(h) \, dh
∫010000m(h) dh≈M5=m(1000)⋅2000+m(3000)⋅2000+m(5000)⋅2000+m(7000)⋅2000+m(9000)⋅2000=(1875+1780+1685+1585+1490)⋅2000≈0.007634980475⋅2000≈15.27 .\begin{aligned}\int_{0}^{10000} m(h) \, dh &\approx M_5 \\ &= m(1000) \cdot 2000 + m(3000) \cdot 2000 + m(5000) \cdot 2000 \\ &+ m(7000) \cdot 2000 + m(9000) \cdot 2000 \\ &= \left( \frac{1}{875} + \frac{1}{780} + \frac{1}{685} + \frac{1}{585} + \frac{1}{490} \right) \cdot 2000 \\ &\approx 0.007634980475 \cdot 2000 \\ &\approx 15.27\end{aligned}\,.

(a) Since the given climb rate, c(h)c(h), is in feet per minute, and the new function, m(h)m(h), is measured in minutes per foot, it follows that m(h)m(h) is the reciprocal of c(h)c(h), so m(h)=1c(h)m(h) = \frac{1}{c(h)}. Hence we get the following updated table.

hh (feet) 00 10001000 20002000 30003000 40004000 50005000 60006000 70007000 80008000 90009000 10,00010{,}000
cc (ft/min) 925925 875875 830830 780780 730730 685685 635635 585585 535535 490490 440440
mm (min/ft) 1925\frac{1}{925} 1875\frac{1}{875} 1830\frac{1}{830} 1780\frac{1}{780} 1730\frac{1}{730} 1685\frac{1}{685} 1635\frac{1}{635} 1585\frac{1}{585} 1535\frac{1}{535} 1490\frac{1}{490} 1440\frac{1}{440}
(b) Given an original function, we know that the units on its derivative are “units of input per unit of output”. Since the units on m(h)m(h) are “minutes per foot”, it follows that the antiderivative of m(h)m(h) should have output units of “minutes” since its input units are “feet”. The antiderivative function should thus tell us the total number of minutes that it takes for the plane to climb to an altitude of hh feet.
(c) The number of minutes required for the airplane to ascend to 10,00010{,}000 feet of altitude is given by the definite integral
M=∫010000m(h) dhM = \int_{0}^{10000} m(h) \, dh
since the units on m(h)m(h) are “minutes per foot” and the units on △h\triangle h in the corresponding Riemann sum are “feet”, so when we take the product of quantities with these units, the resulting numerical quantity is measured in minutes.
(d) For the Riemann sum M5M_5, we have 55 subintervals. Given the original data, this means that we need to evaluate the function at every other known data point. In particular,
∫010000m(h) dh≈M5=m(1000)⋅2000+m(3000)⋅2000+m(5000)⋅2000+m(7000)⋅2000+m(9000)⋅2000=(1875+1780+1685+1585+1490)⋅2000≈0.007634980475⋅2000≈15.27 .\begin{aligned}\int_{0}^{10000} m(h) \, dh &\approx M_5 \\ &= m(1000) \cdot 2000 + m(3000) \cdot 2000 + m(5000) \cdot 2000 \\ &+ m(7000) \cdot 2000 + m(9000) \cdot 2000 \\ &= \left( \frac{1}{875} + \frac{1}{780} + \frac{1}{685} + \frac{1}{585} + \frac{1}{490} \right) \cdot 2000 \\ &\approx 0.007634980475 \cdot 2000 \\ &\approx 15.27\end{aligned}\,. Thus, it takes the plane a bit more than 1515 minutes to climb to an altitude of 10,000 feet.

  • 학생 A는 ∫f(x) dx=tan⁡2x+x+C\int f(x)\ \mathrm{d}x = \tan^2 x + x + C 라고 계산한다.
  • 학생 B는 ∫f(x) dx=sec⁡2x+x+C\int f(x)\ \mathrm{d}x = \sec^2 x + x + C 라고 계산한다.
  • ddx{tan⁡2x}=f(x)−1\frac{\mathrm{d}}{\mathrm{d}x}\{\tan^2 x\} = f(x)-1 임이 알려져 있다.

학생 A의 풀이를 확인하면 다음과 같다. ddx{tan⁡2x+x+C}=ddx{tan⁡2x}+1+0=f(x)−1+1=f(x)\frac{\mathrm{d}}{\mathrm{d}x}\{\tan^2 x + x + C\}=\frac{\mathrm{d}}{\mathrm{d}x}\{\tan^2 x\} +1 + 0 = f(x)-1+1=f(x) 따라서 학생 A의 답은 실제로 f(x)f(x) 의 원시함수이다.
