각각의 경우에 대해, 주어진 두 직선이 만나는지 판단하세요. 또한 두 직선을 모두 포함하는 평면을 모두 구하세요.

(a) <x,y,z>=<−3,2,4>+t<−4,2,1>\left< x,y,z\right> = \left< -3,2,4\right>+t\left< -4,2,1\right> 과 <x,y,z>=<2,1,2>+t<1,1,−1>\left< x,y,z\right> = \left< 2,1,2\right>+t\left< 1,1,-1\right> (b) <x,y,z>=<−3,2,4>+t<−4,2,1>\left< x,y,z\right> = \left< -3,2,4\right>+t\left< -4,2,1\right> 과 <x,y,z>=<2,1,−1>+t<1,1,−1>\left< x,y,z\right> = \left< 2,1,-1\right>+t\left< 1,1,-1\right> (c) <x,y,z>=<−3,2,4>+t<−2,−2,2>\left< x,y,z\right> = \left< -3,2,4\right>+t\left< -2,-2,2\right> 과 <x,y,z>=<2,1,−1>+t<1,1,−1>\left< x,y,z\right> = \left< 2,1,-1\right>+t\left< 1,1,-1\right> (d) <x,y,z>=<3,2,−2>+t<−2,−2,2>\left< x,y,z\right> = \left< 3,2,-2\right>+t\left< -2,-2,2\right> 과 <x,y,z>=<2,1,−1>+t<1,1,−1>\left< x,y,z\right> = \left< 2,1,-1\right>+t\left< 1,1,-1\right>

(a) <x,y,z>=<−3,2,4>+t<−4,2,1>\left< x,y,z\right> = \left< -3,2,4\right>+t\left< -4,2,1\right> and <x,y,z>=<2,1,2>+t<1,1,−1>\left< x,y,z\right> = \left< 2,1,2\right>+t\left< 1,1,-1\right> (b) <x,y,z>=<−3,2,4>+t<−4,2,1>\left< x,y,z\right> = \left< -3,2,4\right>+t\left< -4,2,1\right> and <x,y,z>=<2,1,−1>+t<1,1,−1>\left< x,y,z\right> = \left< 2,1,-1\right>+t\left< 1,1,-1\right> (c) <x,y,z>=<−3,2,4>+t<−2,−2,2>\left< x,y,z\right> = \left< -3,2,4\right>+t\left< -2,-2,2\right> and <x,y,z>=<2,1,−1>+t<1,1,−1>\left< x,y,z\right> = \left< 2,1,-1\right>+t\left< 1,1,-1\right> (d) <x,y,z>=<3,2,−2>+t<−2,−2,2>\left< x,y,z\right> = \left< 3,2,-2\right>+t\left< -2,-2,2\right> and <x,y,z>=<2,1,−1>+t<1,1,−1>\left< x,y,z\right> = \left< 2,1,-1\right>+t\left< 1,1,-1\right>

(a) 방정식 <x,y,z>=<−3,2,4>+t<−4,2,1>\left< x,y,z\right> = \left< -3,2,4\right>+t\left< -4,2,1\right> 의 매개변수 tt 의 값이 방정식 <x,y,z>=<2,1,2>+t<1,1,−1>\left< x,y,z\right> = \left< 2,1,2\right>+t\left< 1,1,-1\right> 의 매개변수 tt 의 값과 같을 필요는 없다. 따라서 첫 번째 방정식의 매개변수 이름을 tt 에서 ss 로 바꾸는 것이 훨씬 안전하다. 점 (x,y,z)(x,y,z) 가 두 직선 위에 모두 놓이려면

<−3,2,4>+s<−4,2,1>=<2,1,2>+t<1,1,−1>\left< -3,2,4\right>+s\left< -4,2,1\right> = \left< 2,1,2\right>+t\left< 1,1,-1\right>

이어야 한다. 이는 세 성분별 등식을 쓰고 ss 와 tt 를 포함한 항은 모두 좌변으로, 상수는 우변으로 옮긴 다음과 같은 식과 같다.

−4s−t=52s−t=−1s+t=−2\begin{aligned} -4s -t &= 5\\ 2s -t &= -1\\ s +t &= -2 \end{aligned}

마지막 두 식을 더하면 3s=−33s=-3 이므로 s=−1s=-1 이다. 이를 마지막 식에 대입하면 t=−1t=-1 이다. s=t=−1s=t=-1 은 세 식을 모두 만족하므로 <x,y,z>=<−3,2,4>−<−4,2,1>=<1,0,3>\left< x,y,z\right>=\left< -3,2,4\right>-\left< -4,2,1\right>=\left< 1,0,3\right> 은 두 직선 위에 모두 놓인다. 두 직선을 모두 포함하는 평면은 두 방향 벡터 <−4,2,1>\left< -4,2,1\right> 과 <1,1,−1>\left< 1,1,-1\right> 에 모두 평행해야 한다. 따라서 이 평면의 법선 벡터는 두 방향 벡터에 수직이어야 하고, 즉 <−4,2,1>×<1,1,−1>=<−3,−3,−6>=−3<1,1,2>\left< -4,2,1\right>\times\left< 1,1,-1\right>=\left< -3,-3,-6\right>=-3\left< 1,1,2\right> 에 평행해야 한다. 이 평면은 (1,0,3)(1,0,3) 을 지나고 <1,1,2>\left< 1,1,2\right> 에 수직이다. 평면의 방정식은 <1,1,2>⋅<x−1,y,z−3>=0\left< 1,1,2\right>\cdot\left< x-1,y,z-3\right>=0, 즉 x+y+2z=7x+y+2z=7 이다. 이는 <−3,2,4>+s<−4,2,1>\left< -3,2,4\right>+s\left< -4,2,1\right> 과 <2,1,2>+t<1,1,−1>\left< 2,1,2\right>+t\left< 1,1,-1\right> 이 각각 모든 ss 와 tt 에 대해 x+y+2z=7x+y+2z=7 을 만족함을 확인하여 검증할 수 있다.

(b) 점 (x,y,z)(x,y,z) 가 두 직선 위에 모두 놓이려면

<−3,2,4>+s<−4,2,1>=<2,1,−1>+t<1,1,−1>\left< -3,2,4\right>+s\left< -4,2,1\right> = \left< 2,1,-1\right>+t\left< 1,1,-1\right>

이어야 한다. 이는 세 성분별 등식을 쓰고 ss 와 tt 를 포함한 항은 모두 좌변으로, 상수는 우변으로 옮긴 다음과 같은 식과 같다.

−4s−t=52s−t=−1s+t=−5\begin{aligned} -4s -t &= 5\\ 2s -t &= -1\\ s +t &= -5 \end{aligned}

<−3,2,4>+s<−2,−2,2>=<2,1,−1>+t<1,1,−1>\left< -3,2,4\right>+s\left< -2,-2,2\right> = \left< 2,1,-1\right>+t\left< 1,1,-1\right>

이어야 한다. 이는 세 성분별 등식을 쓰고 ss 와 tt 를 포함한 항은 모두 좌변으로, 상수는 우변으로 옮긴 다음과 같은 식과 같다.

−2s−t=5−2s−t=−12s+t=−5\begin{aligned} -2s -t &= 5\\ -2s -t &= -1\\ 2s +t &= -5 \end{aligned}

첫 번째 식과 두 번째 식은 분명히 모순이다. 두 직선은 만나지 않는다. 두 직선을 모두 포함하는 평면은 <1,1,−1>\left< 1,1,-1\right> 에 평행해야 하고(따라서 <−2,−2,2>=−2<1,1,−1>\left< -2,-2,2\right>=-2\left< 1,1,-1\right> 에도 자동으로 평행하다), 또한 첫 번째 직선 위의 점 (−3,2,4)(-3,2,4) 에서 두 번째 직선 위의 점 (2,1,−1)(2,1,-1) 로 향하는 벡터에도 평행해야 한다. 이 벡터는 <5,−1,−5>\left< 5,-1,-5\right> 이다. 따라서 평면의 법선 벡터는 <5,−1,−5>×<1,1,−1>=<6,0,6>=6<1,0,1>\left< 5,-1,-5\right>\times\left< 1,1,-1\right>=\left< 6,0,6\right>=6\left< 1,0,1\right> 이다. (2,1,−1)(2,1,-1) 을 지나고 <1,0,1>\left< 1,0,1\right> 에 수직인 평면은 <1,0,1>⋅<x−2,y−1,z+1>=0\left< 1,0,1\right>\cdot\left< x-2,y-1,z+1\right>=0, 즉 x+z=1x+z=1 이다.

(d) 이번에도 <−2,−2,2>=−2<1,1,−1>\left< -2,-2,2\right>=-2\left< 1,1,-1\right> 이므로 두 직선은 평행하다. 게다가 점 <3,2,−2>=<3,2,−2>+0<−2,−2,2>=<2,1,−1>+1<1,1,−1>\left< 3,2,-2\right>=\left< 3,2,-2\right>+0\left< -2,-2,2\right> =\left< 2,1,-1\right>+1\left< 1,1,-1\right> 은 두 직선 위에 모두 놓인다. 따라서 두 직선은 만날 뿐만 아니라 일치한다. 점 (3,2,−2)(3,2,-2) 를 지나고 <1,1,−1>\left< 1,1,-1\right> 에 평행한 평면은 모두 두 직선을 포함한다. 일반적으로 평면 ax+by+cz=dax+by+cz=d 가 (3,2,−2)(3,2,-2) 를 지날 필요충분조건은 d=3a+2b−2cd=3a+2b-2c 이고, <1,1,−1>\left< 1,1,-1\right> 에 평행할 필요충분조건은 <a,b,c>⋅<1,1,−1>=a+b−c=0\left< a,b,c\right>\cdot\left< 1,1,-1\right>=a+b-c=0 이다. 따라서 (둘 다 0은 아닌) 임의의 aa, bb 에 대해 ax+by+(a+b)z=aax+by+(a+b)z=a 가 조건을 만족한다.

원본 교재 풀이(영어)

(a) Note that the value of the parameter tt in the equation <x,y,z>=<−3,2,4>+t<−4,2,1>\left< x,y,z\right> = \left< -3,2,4\right>+t\left< -4,2,1\right> need not have the same value as the parameter tt in the equation <x,y,z>=<2,1,2>+t<1,1,−1>\left< x,y,z\right> = \left< 2,1,2\right>+t\left< 1,1,-1\right>. So it is much safer to change the name of the parameter in the first equation from tt to ss. In order for a point (x,y,z)(x,y,z) to lie on both lines we need

<−3,2,4>+s<−4,2,1>=<2,1,2>+t<1,1,−1>\left< -3,2,4\right>+s\left< -4,2,1\right> = \left< 2,1,2\right>+t\left< 1,1,-1\right>

or equivalently, writing out the three component equations and moving all ss's and tt's to the left and constants to the right,

−4s−t=52s−t=−1s+t=−2\begin{aligned} -4s -t &= 5\\ 2s -t &= -1\\ s +t &= -2 \end{aligned}

Adding the last two equations together gives 3s=−33s=-3 or s=−1s=-1. Substituting this into the last equation gives t=−1t=-1. Note that s=t=−1s=t=-1 does indeed satisfy all three equations so that <x,y,z>=<−3,2,4>−<−4,2,1>=<1,0,3>\left< x,y,z\right>=\left< -3,2,4\right>-\left< -4,2,1\right>=\left< 1,0,3\right> lies on both lines. Any plane that contains the two lines must be parallel to both direction vectors <−4,2,1>\left< -4,2,1\right> and <1,1,−1>\left< 1,1,-1\right>. So its normal vector must be perpendicular to them, i.e. must be parallel to <−4,2,1>×<1,1,−1>=<−3,−3,−6>=−3<1,1,2>\left< -4,2,1\right>\times\left< 1,1,-1\right>=\left< -3,-3,-6\right>=-3\left< 1,1,2\right>. The plane must contain (1,0,3)(1,0,3) and be perpendicular to <1,1,2>\left< 1,1,2\right>. Its equation is <1,1,2>⋅<x−1,y,z−3>=0\left< 1,1,2\right>\cdot\left< x-1,y,z-3\right>=0 or x+y+2z=7x+y+2z=7. This can be checked by verifying that <−3,2,4>+s<−4,2,1>\left< -3,2,4\right>+s\left< -4,2,1\right> and <2,1,2>+t<1,1,−1>\left< 2,1,2\right>+t\left< 1,1,-1\right> obey x+y+2z=7x+y+2z=7 for all ss and tt respectively.

(b) In order for a point (x,y,z)(x,y,z) to lie on both lines we need

<−3,2,4>+s<−4,2,1>=<2,1,−1>+t<1,1,−1>\left< -3,2,4\right>+s\left< -4,2,1\right> = \left< 2,1,-1\right>+t\left< 1,1,-1\right>

or equivalently, writing out the three component equations and moving all ss's and tt's to the left and constants to the right,

−4s−t=52s−t=−1s+t=−5\begin{aligned} -4s -t &= 5\\ 2s -t &= -1\\ s +t &= -5 \end{aligned}

Adding the last two equations together gives 3s=−63s=-6 or s=−2s=-2. Substituting this into the last equation gives t=−3t=-3. However, substituting s=−2, t=−3s=-2,\ t=-3 into the first equation gives 11=511=5, which is impossible. The two lines do not intersect. In order for two lines to lie in a common plane and not intersect, they must be parallel. So, in this case no plane contains the two lines.

(c) In order for a point (x,y,z)(x,y,z) to lie on both lines we need

<−3,2,4>+s<−2,−2,2>=<2,1,−1>+t<1,1,−1>\left< -3,2,4\right>+s\left< -2,-2,2\right> = \left< 2,1,-1\right>+t\left< 1,1,-1\right>

or equivalently, writing out the three component equations and moving all ss's and tt's to the left and constants to the right,

−2s−t=5−2s−t=−12s+t=−5\begin{aligned} -2s -t &= 5\\ -2s -t &= -1\\ 2s +t &= -5 \end{aligned}

The first two equations are obviously contradictory. The two lines do not intersect. Any plane containing the two lines must be parallel to <1,1,−1>\left< 1,1,-1\right> (and hence automatically parallel to <−2,−2,2>=−2<1,1,−1>\left< -2,-2,2\right>=-2\left< 1,1,-1\right>) and must also be parallel to the vector from the point (−3,2,4)(-3,2,4), which lies on the first line, to the point (2,1,−1)(2,1,-1), which lies on the second. The vector is <5,−1,−5>\left< 5,-1,-5\right>. Hence the normal to the plane is <5,−1,−5>×<1,1,−1>=<6,0,6>=6<1,0,1>\left< 5,-1,-5\right>\times\left< 1,1,-1\right>=\left< 6,0,6\right>=6\left< 1,0,1\right>. The plane perpendicular to <1,0,1>\left< 1,0,1\right> containing (2,1,−1)(2,1,-1) is <1,0,1>⋅<x−2,y−1,z+1>=0\left< 1,0,1\right>\cdot\left< x-2,y-1,z+1\right>=0 or x+z=1x+z=1.

(d) Again the two lines are parallel, since <−2,−2,2>=−2<1,1,−1>\left< -2,-2,2\right>=-2\left< 1,1,-1\right>. Furthermore the point <3,2,−2>=<3,2,−2>+0<−2,−2,2>=<2,1,−1>+1<1,1,−1>\left< 3,2,-2\right>=\left< 3,2,-2\right>+0\left< -2,-2,2\right> =\left< 2,1,-1\right>+1\left< 1,1,-1\right> lies on both lines. So the two lines not only intersect but are identical. Any plane that contains the point (3,2,−2)(3,2,-2) and is parallel to <1,1,−1>\left< 1,1,-1\right> contains both lines. In general, the plane ax+by+cz=dax+by+cz=d contains (3,2,−2)(3,2,-2) if and only if d=3a+2b−2cd=3a+2b-2c and is parallel to <1,1,−1>\left< 1,1,-1\right> if and only if <a,b,c>⋅<1,1,−1>=a+b−c=0\left< a,b,c\right>\cdot\left< 1,1,-1\right>=a+b-c=0. So, for arbitrary aa and bb (not both zero) ax+by+(a+b)z=aax+by+(a+b)z=a works.
