(a)
In polar coordinates, x=rcosθ, y=rsinθ, so that
x4+y4x8+y8=r4cos4θ+r4sin4θr8cos8θ+r8sin8θ=r4cos4θ+sin4θcos8θ+sin8θ
As
cos4θ+sin4θcos8θ+sin8θ≤cos4θ+sin4θcos8θ+2cos4θsin4θ+sin8θ=cos4θ+sin4θ(cos4θ+sin4θ)2=cos4θ+sin4θ≤2
we have
0≤x4+y4x8+y8≤2r4
As (x,y)→(0,0)lim2r4=0, the squeeze theorem yields
(x,y)→(0,0)limx4+y4x8+y8=0.
(b)
In polar coordinates
x8+y10xy5=r8cos8θ+r10sin10θr6cosθsin5θ=r21cos8θ+r2sin10θcosθsin5θ
As (x,y)→(0,0) the first fraction r21→∞ but the second
factor can take many different values. For example, if we send (x,y)
towards the origin along the y–axis, i.e. with
θ=±2π,
x=0(x,y)→(0,0)limx8+y10xy5=y→0limy100=0
but if we send (x,y) towards the origin along the line y=x,
i.e. with θ=4π,45π,
y=x(x,y)→(0,0)limx8+y10xy5=x→0limx8+x10x6=x→0limx211+x21=+∞
and if we send (x,y) towards the origin along the line y=−x,
i.e. with θ=−4π,43π,
y=−x(x,y)→(0,0)limx8+y10xy5=x→0limx8+x10−x6=x→0lim−x211+x21=−∞
So x8+y10xy5 does not approach a single value as
(x,y)→(0,0) and the limit does not exist.
