(a) Since, in polar coordinates,
x2+y2xy=r2r2cosθsinθ=cosθsinθ
we have that the limit does not exist. For example,
- if we send (x,y)
to (0,0) along the positive x-axis, so that θ=0,
we get the limit sinθcosθθ=0=0,
- while if we send (x,y) to (0,0) along the line y=x in the first quadrant,
so that θ=4π, we get the limit sinθcosθθ=π/4=21.
(b) This limit does not exist, since if it were to exist the limit
(x,y)→(0,0)limx2+y2xy=(x,y)→(0,0)limsin(xy)xy x2+y2sin(xy)=(x,y)→(0,0)limsin(xy)xy (x,y)→(0,0)limx2+y2sin(xy)
would also exist. (Recall that t→0limtsint=1.)
(c) Since
(x,y)→(−1,1)lim[x2+2xy2+y4](x,y)→(−1,1)lim[1+y4]=(−1)2+2(−1)(1)2+(1)4=0=1+(1)4=2
and the second limit is nonzero,
(x,y)→(−1,1)lim1+y4x2+2xy2+y4=20=0
(d) Since the limit along the positive x-axis
t>0t→0lim∣y∣x(x,y)=(t,0)=t>0t→0lim0t=t>0t→0lim0=0
and the limit along the y-axis
t→0lim∣y∣x(x,y)=(0,t)=t→0lim∣t∣0=t→0lim1=1
are different, the limit as (x,y)→0 does not exist.
