Filters at a water treatment plant become dirtier over time and thus become less effective; they are replaced every 30 days. During one 30-day period, the rate at which pollution passes through the filters into a nearby lake (in units of particulate matter per day) is measured every 6 days and is given in the following table. The time is measured in days since the filters were replaced.

(a) Plot the given data on a set of axes with time on the horizontal axis and the rate of pollution on the vertical axis. (b) Explain why the amount of pollution that entered the lake during this 30-day period would be given exactly by the area bounded by and the -axis on the time interval . (c) Estimate the total amount of pollution entering the lake during this 30-day period. Carefully explain how you determined your estimate.

(a) The plot below shows that the rate of pollution appears to be increasing at an increasing rate as time goes on.
(b) If we think about an interval on which the rate of pollution is relatively constant and suppose the interval is wide, then the area under the curve on that interval is approximately the area of the rectangle whose width is and whose height is , the polution rate on that interval. When we compute the product to find the area, the units involved are “units of pollution per day” times “days”, which results in an overall unit of “units of pollution”. Thus, the area under the curve tells us the total pollution emitted over the time interval .
(c) One way to estimate the total amount of pollution is to suppose the rate of pollution is constant on each of the intervals , , . For instance, we could assume the rate on is always units per day, and then the rate jumps to units per day on , and so on. Doing so, and using the ideas we discussed in (b), one estimate for the total pollution, , is
total units of pollution. Note, for example, that when we compute this represents an estimate of the total amount of pollution emitted on the interval since we are assuming the plant emits units of pollution per day for 6 days. It is apparent that this particular estimate is an underestimate of the total amount of pollution since the rate is always increasing but we are choosing the lowest value of that rate on a given interval.
