Proof. Let A and B be subsets of some universal set. We will prove that A−B=A∩Bc by proving that each set is a subset of the other set. We will first prove that A−B⊆A∩Bc. Let x∈A−B. We then know that x∈A and x∈/B. However, x∈/B implies that x∈Bc. Hence, x∈A and x∈Bc, which means that x∈A∩Bc. This proves that A−B⊆A∩Bc.
To prove that A∩Bc⊆A−B, we let y∈A∩Bc. This means that y∈A and y∈Bc, and hence, y∈A and y∈/B. Therefore, y∈A−B and this proves that A∩Bc⊆A−B. Since we have proved that each set is a subset of the other set, we have proved that A−B=A∩Bc.
