According to van der Waal's equation, a gas satisfies the equation

(pV2+16)(V−1)=TV2,(pV^2 + 16)(V - 1) = T V^2 ,

where pp, VV and TT denote pressure, volume and temperature respectively. Suppose the gas is now at pressure 11, volume 22 and temperature 55. Find the approximate change in its volume if pp is increased by 0.20.2 and TT is increased by 0.30.3.

(pV(p,T)2+16)(V(p,T)−1)=TV(p,T)2(∗)\big(pV(p,T)^2 + 16\big)\big(V(p,T) - 1\big) = T V(p,T)^2 \tag{$*$}

그러려면 편도함수 Vp(1,5)V_p(1,5) 와 VT(1,5)V_T(1,5) 가 필요하다.

(V2+2pVVp)(V−1)+(pV2+16)Vp=2TVVp\begin{aligned} &\big(V^2 +2 pV V_p\big)\big(V - 1\big) + \big(pV ^2 + 16\big)V_p = 2T V V_p \end{aligned}

(2pVVT)(V−1)+(pV2+16)VT=V2+2TVVT\begin{aligned} &\big(2 pV V_T\big)\big(V - 1\big) + \big(pV ^2 + 16\big)V_T = V^2 + 2T V V_T \end{aligned}

특히 p=1p=1, V=2V=2, T=5T=5 일 때

(4+4Vp(1,5))(2−1)+(4+16)Vp(1,5)=20Vp(1,5)  ⟹  Vp(1,5)=−14VT(1,5)(2−1)+(4+16)VT(1,5)=4+20VT(1,5)  ⟹  VT(1,5)=1\begin{aligned} \big(4 +4 V_p(1,5)\big)\big(2 - 1\big) + \big(4 + 16\big)V_p(1,5) &= 20 V_p(1,5) &\quad\implies V_p(1,5)&=-1 \\ 4 V_T(1,5)\big(2 - 1\big) + \big(4 + 16\big)V_T(1,5) &= 4 + 20 V_T(1,5) &\quad\implies V_T(1,5)&=1 \end{aligned}

V(1.2 , 5.3)−V(1,5)≈Vp(1,5) (0.2)+VT(1,5) (0.3)=−0.2+0.3=0.1\begin{aligned} V(1.2\,,\,5.3)-V(1,5) \approx V_p(1,5)\,(0.2) + V_T(1,5)\,(0.3) = -0.2+0.3 = 0.1 \end{aligned}

Think of the volume as being the function V(p,T)V(p,T) of pressure and temperature that is determined implicitly (at least for p≈1p\approx 1, T≈5T\approx 5 and V≈2V\approx 2) by the equation

(pV(p,T)2+16)(V(p,T)−1)=TV(p,T)2(∗)\big(pV(p,T)^2 + 16\big)\big(V(p,T) - 1\big) = T V(p,T)^2 \tag{$*$}

To determine the approximate change in VV, we will use the linear approximation to V(p,T)V(p,T) at p=1p=1, T=5T=5. So we will need the partial derivatives Vp(1,5)V_p(1,5) and VT(1,5)V_T(1,5). As the equation (∗)(*) is valid for all pp near 11 and TT near 5, we may differentiate (∗)(*) with respect to pp, giving

(V2+2pVVp)(V−1)+(pV2+16)Vp=2TVVp\begin{aligned} &\big(V^2 +2 pV V_p\big)\big(V - 1\big) + \big(pV ^2 + 16\big)V_p = 2T V V_p \end{aligned}

and we may also differentiate (∗)(*) with respect to TT, giving

(2pVVT)(V−1)+(pV2+16)VT=V2+2TVVT\begin{aligned} &\big(2 pV V_T\big)\big(V - 1\big) + \big(pV ^2 + 16\big)V_T = V^2 + 2T V V_T \end{aligned}

In particular, when p=1p=1, V=2V=2, T=5T=5,

(4+4Vp(1,5))(2−1)+(4+16)Vp(1,5)=20Vp(1,5)  ⟹  Vp(1,5)=−14VT(1,5)(2−1)+(4+16)VT(1,5)=4+20VT(1,5)  ⟹  VT(1,5)=1\begin{aligned} \big(4 +4 V_p(1,5)\big)\big(2 - 1\big) + \big(4 + 16\big)V_p(1,5) &= 20 V_p(1,5) &\quad\implies V_p(1,5)&=-1 \\ 4 V_T(1,5)\big(2 - 1\big) + \big(4 + 16\big)V_T(1,5) &= 4 + 20 V_T(1,5) &\quad\implies V_T(1,5)&=1 \end{aligned}

so that the change in VV is

V(1.2 , 5.3)−V(1,5)≈Vp(1,5) (0.2)+VT(1,5) (0.3)=−0.2+0.3=0.1\begin{aligned} V(1.2\,,\,5.3)-V(1,5) \approx V_p(1,5)\,(0.2) + V_T(1,5)\,(0.3) = -0.2+0.3 = 0.1 \end{aligned}

You are standing at a lone palm tree in the middle of the Exponential Desert. The height of the sand dunes around you is given in meters by h(x,y)=100e−(x2+2y2)h(x,y)=100 e^{-(x^2+2y^2)} where xx represents the number of meters east of the palm tree (west if xx is negative) and yy represents the number of meters north of the palm tree (south if yy is negative).

(a) Suppose that you walk 33 meters east and 2 meters north. At your new location, (3,2)(3,2), in what direction is the sand dune sloping most steeply downward? (b) If you walk north from the location described in part (a), what is the instantaneous rate of change of height of the sand dune? (c) If you are standing at (3,2)(3,2) in what direction should you walk to ensure that you remain at the same height? (d) Find the equation of the curve through (3,2)(3,2) that you should move along in order that you are always pointing in a steepest descent direction at each point of this curve.

∇h(x,y)=−200e−(x2+2y2)<x,2y> 이고, 특히 ∇h(3,2)=−200e−17<3,4>{ \boldsymbol{\nabla} } h(x,y)= -200 e^{-(x^2+2y^2)}\left< x,2y\right>\text{ 이고, 특히 } { \boldsymbol{\nabla} } h(3,2)= -200 e^{-17}\left< 3,4\right>

(b) 변화율은 Dȷ^h(3,2)=∇h(3,2)⋅ȷ^=−800e−17D_{\hat{\boldsymbol{\jmath}}} h(3,2)={ \boldsymbol{\nabla} } h(3,2)\cdot\hat{\boldsymbol{\jmath}}=-800 e^{-17} 이다.

따라서 ±(45,−35)\pm\big(\frac{4}{5},-\frac{3}{5}\big) 중 한 방향으로 걸어야 한다.

dydx=2yx  ⟹  dyy=2dxx  ⟹  ln⁡y=2ln⁡x+C\begin{aligned} \frac{\mathrm{d}y}{\mathrm{d}x}=\frac{2y}{x} \implies \frac{\mathrm{d}y}{y}=2\frac{\mathrm{d}x}{x} \implies \ln y=2\ln x+C \end{aligned}

We have

∇h(x,y)=−200e−(x2+2y2)<x,2y> and, in particular, ∇h(3,2)=−200e−17<3,4>{ \boldsymbol{\nabla} } h(x,y)= -200 e^{-(x^2+2y^2)}\left< x,2y\right>\text{ and, in particular, } { \boldsymbol{\nabla} } h(3,2)= -200 e^{-17}\left< 3,4\right>

(a) At (3,2)(3,2) the dune slopes downward the most steeply in the direction opposite ∇h(3,2){ \boldsymbol{\nabla} } h(3,2), which is (any positive multiple of) <3,4>\left< 3,4\right>.

(b) The rate is Dȷ^h(3,2)=∇h(3,2)⋅ȷ^=−800e−17D_{\hat{\boldsymbol{\jmath}}} h(3,2)={ \boldsymbol{\nabla} } h(3,2)\cdot\hat{\boldsymbol{\jmath}}=-800 e^{-17}.

(c) To remain at the same height, you should walk perpendicular to ∇h(3,2){ \boldsymbol{\nabla} } h(3,2). So you should walk in one of the directions ±(45,−35)\pm\big(\frac{4}{5},-\frac{3}{5}\big).

(d) Suppose that you are walking along a steepest descent curve. Then the direction from (x,y)(x,y) to (x+dx,y+dy)(x+\mathrm{d}x, y+\mathrm{d}y), with (dx,dy)(\mathrm{d}x,\mathrm{d}y) infinitesmal, must be opposite to ∇h(x,y)=−200e−(x2+2y2)(x,2y){ \boldsymbol{\nabla} } h(x,y)= -200 e^{-(x^2+2y^2)}(x,2y). Thus (dx,dy)(\mathrm{d}x,\mathrm{d}y) must be parallel to (x,2y)(x,2y) so that the slope

dydx=2yx  ⟹  dyy=2dxx  ⟹  ln⁡y=2ln⁡x+C\begin{aligned} \frac{\mathrm{d}y}{\mathrm{d}x}=\frac{2y}{x} \implies \frac{\mathrm{d}y}{y}=2\frac{\mathrm{d}x}{x} \implies \ln y=2\ln x+C \end{aligned}

We must choose CC to obey ln⁡2=2ln⁡3+C\ln 2=2\ln 3+C in order to pass through the point (3,2)(3,2). Thus C=ln⁡29C=\ln\frac{2}{9} and the curve is ln⁡y=2ln⁡x+ln⁡29\ln y=2\ln x+\ln\frac{2}{9} or y=29x2y=\frac{2}{9}x^2.

∇T(1,1)=<−8x,−2y>∣(x,y)=(1,1)=<−8,−2>{ \boldsymbol{\nabla} } T(1,1)=\left< -8x,-2y\right>\Big|_{(x,y)=(1,1)}=\left< -8,-2\right>.

∇T(1,1)⋅<−2,−1>=<−8,−2>⋅<−2,−1>=18\begin{aligned} { \boldsymbol{\nabla} } T(1,1)\cdot\left< -2,-1\right> =\left< -8,-2\right>\cdot\left< -2,-1\right> =18 \end{aligned}

T(x,2−x2)=20−4x2−(2−x2)2=16−x4\begin{aligned} T\big(x,2-x^2\big) =20 -4x^2-\big(2-x^2\big)^2 = 16-x^4 \end{aligned}

(a) The maximum and minimum can occur either in the interior of the disk or on the boundary of the disk. The boundary of the disk is the circle x2+y2=4x^2+y^2=4.

  • Any absolute max or min in the interior of the disk must also be a local max or min and, since there are no singular points, must also be a critical point of hh. Since Tx=−8xT_x=-8x and Ty=−2yT_y=-2y, the only critical point is (x,y)=(0,0)(x,y)=(0,0), where T=20T=20. Since 4x2+y2≥04x^2+y^2\ge 0, we have T(x,y)=20−4x2−y2≤20T(x,y)=20-4x^2-y^2\le 20. So the maximum value of TT (even in R2\mathbb{R}^2) is 2020.
  • At each point of x2+y2=4x^2+y^2=4 we have T(x,y)=20−4x2−y2=20−4x2−(4−x2)=16−3x2T(x,y)=20-4x^2-y^2=20 -4x^2-(4-x^2)=16-3x^2 with −2≤x≤2-2\le x\le 2. So TT is a minimum when x2x^2 is a maximum. Thus the minimum value of TT on the disk is 16−3(±2)2=416-3(\pm 2)^2=4.

So all together, the maximum and minimum values of T(x,y)T(x,y) in x2+y2≤4x^2+y^2\le 4 are 2020 (at (0,0)(0,0)) and 44 (at (±2,0)(\pm 2,0)), respectively.

(b) To increase its temperature as quickly as possible, the ant should move in the direction of the temperature gradient ∇T(1,1)=<−8x,−2y>∣(x,y)=(1,1)=<−8,−2>{ \boldsymbol{\nabla} } T(1,1)=\left< -8x,-2y\right>\Big|_{(x,y)=(1,1)}=\left< -8,-2\right>. A unit vector in that direction is 117<−4,−1>\frac{1}{\sqrt{17}}\left< -4,-1\right>.

(c) The ant's rate f increase of temperature (per unit time) is

∇T(1,1)⋅<−2,−1>=<−8,−2>⋅<−2,−1>=18\begin{aligned} { \boldsymbol{\nabla} } T(1,1)\cdot\left< -2,-1\right> =\left< -8,-2\right>\cdot\left< -2,-1\right> =18 \end{aligned}

(d) We are being asked to find the (x,y)=(x,2−x2)(x,y)=(x,2-x^2) which maximizes

T(x,2−x2)=20−4x2−(2−x2)2=16−x4\begin{aligned} T\big(x,2-x^2\big) =20 -4x^2-\big(2-x^2\big)^2 = 16-x^4 \end{aligned}

The maximum of 16−x416-x^4 is obviously 1616 at x=0x=0. So the ant should go to (0,2−02)=(0,2)\big(0,2-0^2\big)=(0,2).
