Let . What is , if is a whole number?
We differentiate a few time to find the pattern.
Let , where , , , and are nonzero constants. What is the smallest integer so that for all ?
We differentiate using the power rule.
In the above work, remember that , , , and are all constants. Since they are nonzero constants, . So, the fourth derivative is the first derivative to be identically zero: .
Suppose is a function whose first derivatives exist over all real numbers, and has precisely roots. What is the maximum number of roots that may have?

Since is differentiable over all real numbers, it is also continuous over all real numbers. Similarly, is differentiable over all real numbers, so it is also continuous over all real numbers, and so on for the first derivatives of .
Rolle's Theorem tells us that if and are distinct roots of a function , then for some in . That is, has a root strictly between and . Expanding this idea, if has distinct roots, then must have at least distinct roots, as in the sketch below.

So, if has only roots, then has at most roots. Similarly, since has at most roots, has at most roots. Continuing in this way, we see has at most distinct roots.
