∫0π/2cos⁡t+1 dt=∫0π/22cos⁡2(t/2) dt=2∫0π/2∣cos⁡(t/2)∣ dt구간 [0,π2] 에서 cos⁡(t/2)>0 이므로 절댓값 기호를 없앨 수 있다.=2∫0π/2cos⁡(t/2) dt=2[2sin⁡(t2)]0π/2=22sin⁡(π4)=2\begin{aligned} \int_0^{\pi/2}\sqrt{\cos t+1}\ \mathrm{d}t&=\int_0^{\pi/2}\sqrt{2\cos^2 (t/2)}~\mathrm{d}t = \sqrt{2}\int_0^{\pi/2} |\cos (t/2)|~\mathrm{d}t \\ \text{구간 $[0,\frac{\pi}{2}]$ 에서 $\cos (t/2) >0$ 이므로 절댓값 기호를 없앨 수 있다.} \\ &= \sqrt{2}\int_0^{\pi/2} \cos (t/2)~\mathrm{d}t = \sqrt{2}\left[2\sin\left(\frac{t}{2}\right)\right]_0^{\pi/2}\\ &=2\sqrt{2}\sin\left(\frac{\pi}{4}\right) = {2} \end{aligned}

We would like to not have that square root there. Luckily, there's a way of turning cosine into cosine squared: the identity cos⁡(2x)=2cos⁡2x−1\cos(2x) = 2\cos^2x -1. If we take 2x=t2x=t, then cos⁡t=2cos⁡2(t/2)−1\cos t = 2\cos^2(t/2)-1.

∫0π/2cos⁡t+1 dt=∫0π/22cos⁡2(t/2) dt=2∫0π/2∣cos⁡(t/2)∣ dtOver the interval [0,π2], cos⁡(t/2)>0, so we can drop the absolute values.=2∫0π/2cos⁡(t/2) dt=2[2sin⁡(t2)]0π/2=22sin⁡(π4)=2\begin{aligned} \int_0^{\pi/2}\sqrt{\cos t+1}\ \mathrm{d}t&=\int_0^{\pi/2}\sqrt{2\cos^2 (t/2)}~\mathrm{d}t = \sqrt{2}\int_0^{\pi/2} |\cos (t/2)|~\mathrm{d}t \\ \text{Over the interval $[0,\frac{\pi}{2}]$, $\cos (t/2) >0$, so we can drop the absolute values.} \\ &= \sqrt{2}\int_0^{\pi/2} \cos (t/2)~\mathrm{d}t = \sqrt{2}\left[2\sin\left(\frac{t}{2}\right)\right]_0^{\pi/2}\\ &=2\sqrt{2}\sin\left(\frac{\pi}{4}\right) = {2} \end{aligned}

  • 풀이 1: 로그의 성질에 의해 log⁡x=log⁡(x1/2)=12log⁡x\log\sqrt{x} = \log\left(x^{1/2}\right)=\frac{1}{2}\log x 이므로 다음과 같이 간단히 할 수 있다: ∫1elog⁡xxdx=∫1elog⁡x2xdx\int_1^e \frac{\log\sqrt{x}}{{x}}\mathrm{d}x =\int_1^e \frac{\log{x}}{{2x}}\mathrm{d}x

치환 u=log⁡xu=\log x, du=1xdx\mathrm{d}u=\frac{1}{x}\mathrm{d}x 를 사용한다:

∫1elog⁡x2xdx=12∫1elog⁡(x)⏟u⋅1x dx⏟du=12∫log⁡(1)log⁡(e)u du=12∫01u du=12[12u2]01=12[12−0]=14\begin{aligned} \int_1^e \frac{\log{x}}{{2x}}\mathrm{d}x&=\frac{1}{2}\int_1^e \underbrace{\log(x)}_{u}\cdot\underbrace{\frac{1}{x}\,\mathrm{d}x}_{\mathrm{d}u}\\ &=\frac{1}{2}\int_{\log(1)}^{\log(e)}u\,\mathrm{d}u\\ &=\frac{1}{2}\int_{0}^{1}u\,\mathrm{d}u\\ &=\frac{1}{2}\left[ \frac{1}{2}u^2\right]_0^1\\ &=\frac{1}{2}\left[\frac{1}{2}-0\right]=\dfrac{1}{4} \end{aligned}

그러면 dudx=1x⋅12x=12x\dfrac{\mathrm{d}u}{\mathrm{d}x}=\dfrac{1}{\sqrt{x}}\cdot\dfrac{1}{2\sqrt{x}}=\dfrac{1}{2x} 이므로 2du=1xdx2\mathrm{d}u=\dfrac{1}{x}\mathrm{d}x 이다.

∫1elog⁡xxdx=∫log⁡1log⁡eu⋅2du=[u2]01/2=(12)2−02=14\begin{aligned} \int_1^e\frac{\log\sqrt{x}}{x}\mathrm{d}x &= \int_{\log\sqrt{1}}^{\log\sqrt{e}}u\cdot 2\mathrm{d}u \\ &=\Big[u^2\Big]_{0}^{1/2}\\ &=\left(\frac{1}{2}\right)^2-0^2=\frac{1}{4} \end{aligned}

  • Solution 1: Using logarithm rules, log⁡x=log⁡(x1/2)=12log⁡x\log\sqrt{x} = \log\left(x^{1/2}\right)=\frac{1}{2}\log x, so we can simplify: ∫1elog⁡xxdx=∫1elog⁡x2xdx\int_1^e \frac{\log\sqrt{x}}{{x}}\mathrm{d}x =\int_1^e \frac{\log{x}}{{2x}}\mathrm{d}x

We use the substitution u=log⁡xu=\log x, du=1xdx\mathrm{d}u=\frac{1}{x}\mathrm{d}x:

∫1elog⁡x2xdx=12∫1elog⁡(x)⏟u⋅1x dx⏟du=12∫log⁡(1)log⁡(e)u du=12∫01u du=12[12u2]01=12[12−0]=14\begin{aligned} \int_1^e \frac{\log{x}}{{2x}}\mathrm{d}x&=\frac{1}{2}\int_1^e \underbrace{\log(x)}_{u}\cdot\underbrace{\frac{1}{x}\,\mathrm{d}x}_{\mathrm{d}u}\\ &=\frac{1}{2}\int_{\log(1)}^{\log(e)}u\,\mathrm{d}u\\ &=\frac{1}{2}\int_{0}^{1}u\,\mathrm{d}u\\ &=\frac{1}{2}\left[ \frac{1}{2}u^2\right]_0^1\\ &=\frac{1}{2}\left[\frac{1}{2}-0\right]=\dfrac{1}{4} \end{aligned}

  • Solution 2: We use the substitution u=log⁡xu=\log\sqrt{x}. Then dudx=1x⋅12x=12x\dfrac{\mathrm{d}u}{\mathrm{d}x}=\dfrac{1}{\sqrt{x}}\cdot\dfrac{1}{2\sqrt{x}}=\dfrac{1}{2x}, hence 2du=1xdx2\mathrm{d}u=\dfrac{1}{x}\mathrm{d}x. This fits our integral nicely!

∫1elog⁡xxdx=∫log⁡1log⁡eu⋅2du=[u2]01/2=(12)2−02=14\begin{aligned} \int_1^e\frac{\log\sqrt{x}}{x}\mathrm{d}x &= \int_{\log\sqrt{1}}^{\log\sqrt{e}}u\cdot 2\mathrm{d}u \\ &=\Big[u^2\Big]_{0}^{1/2}\\ &=\left(\frac{1}{2}\right)^2-0^2=\frac{1}{4} \end{aligned}

∫0.10.2tan⁡xlog⁡(cos⁡x)dx\int_{0.1}^{0.2} \frac{\tan x}{\log(\cos x)} \mathrm{d}x

이를 염두에 두고 분모의 도함수를 구해 보자. ddx{log⁡(cos⁡x)}=1cos⁡x⋅(−sin⁡x)=−sin⁡xcos⁡x=−tan⁡x\frac{\mathrm{d}}{\mathrm{d}x}\left\{\log(\cos x)\right\}= \frac{1}{\cos x}\cdot (-\sin x) = \frac{-\sin x}{\cos x} = -\tan x

∫0.10.2tan⁡xlog⁡(cos⁡x)dx=∫log⁡(cos⁡(0.1))log⁡(cos⁡(0.2))−duu=[−log⁡∣u∣]log⁡(cos⁡(0.1))log⁡(cos⁡(0.2))=−log⁡∣log⁡(cos⁡0.2)∣+log⁡∣log⁡(cos⁡0.1)∣=log⁡∣log⁡(cos⁡(0.1))log⁡(cos⁡(0.2))∣=log⁡(log⁡(cos⁡(0.1))log⁡(cos⁡(0.2)))\begin{aligned} \int_{0.1}^{0.2} \frac{\tan x}{\log(\cos x)} \mathrm{d}x&= \int_{\log(\cos(0.1))}^{\log(\cos(0.2))} \frac{-\mathrm{d}u}{u}\\ &=\Big[-\log|u|\Big]_{\log(\cos(0.1))}^{\log(\cos(0.2))} \\ &= -\log|\log(\cos 0.2)|+\log|\log(\cos 0.1)|\\ &={\log\left|\frac{\log(\cos(0.1))}{\log(\cos(0.2))}\right|}\\&= \log\left(\frac{\log(\cos(0.1))}{\log(\cos(0.2))}\right) \end{aligned}

밑 변환 공식을 쓰면 최종 답을 log⁡(log⁡cos⁡(0.2)cos⁡(0.1))\log\left(\log_{\cos (0.2)}\cos(0.1)\right) 로도 나타낼 수 있다.

∫0.10.2tan⁡xlog⁡(cos⁡x)dx\int_{0.1}^{0.2} \frac{\tan x}{\log(\cos x)} \mathrm{d}x

It might not be immediately obvious how to proceed on this one, so this is another example of an integral where you should not be discouraged by finding methods that don't work. One thing that's worked for us in the past is to use a uu-substitution with the denominator. With that in mind, let's find the derivative of the denominator. ddx{log⁡(cos⁡x)}=1cos⁡x⋅(−sin⁡x)=−sin⁡xcos⁡x=−tan⁡x\frac{\mathrm{d}}{\mathrm{d}x}\left\{\log(\cos x)\right\}= \frac{1}{\cos x}\cdot (-\sin x) = \frac{-\sin x}{\cos x} = -\tan x

So, if we let u=log⁡(cos⁡xu=\log(\cos x), we see −du=tan⁡xdx-\mathrm{d}u=\tan x \mathrm{d}x, which will work for a substitution.

∫0.10.2tan⁡xlog⁡(cos⁡x)dx=∫log⁡(cos⁡(0.1))log⁡(cos⁡(0.2))−duu=[−log⁡∣u∣]log⁡(cos⁡(0.1))log⁡(cos⁡(0.2))=−log⁡∣log⁡(cos⁡0.2)∣+log⁡∣log⁡(cos⁡0.1)∣=log⁡∣log⁡(cos⁡(0.1))log⁡(cos⁡(0.2))∣=log⁡(log⁡(cos⁡(0.1))log⁡(cos⁡(0.2)))\begin{aligned} \int_{0.1}^{0.2} \frac{\tan x}{\log(\cos x)} \mathrm{d}x&= \int_{\log(\cos(0.1))}^{\log(\cos(0.2))} \frac{-\mathrm{d}u}{u}\\ &=\Big[-\log|u|\Big]_{\log(\cos(0.1))}^{\log(\cos(0.2))} \\ &= -\log|\log(\cos 0.2)|+\log|\log(\cos 0.1)|\\ &={\log\left|\frac{\log(\cos(0.1))}{\log(\cos(0.2))}\right|}\\&= \log\left(\frac{\log(\cos(0.1))}{\log(\cos(0.2))}\right) \end{aligned}

Things to notice: the integrand is only defined when log⁡(cos⁡x)\log(\cos x) exists AND is nonzero. So, for instance, it is not defined when x=0x=0, because then log⁡cos⁡x=log⁡1=0\log\cos x = \log1=0, and we can't divide by zero.

In the final simplification, since 0.10.1 and 0.20.2 are between 0 and π/2\pi/2, the cosine term is positive but less than one, so log⁡(cos⁡0.1)\log(\cos 0.1) and log⁡(cos⁡0.2)\log(\cos 0.2) are both negative; then their quotient is positive, so we can drop the absolute value signs.

Using the base change formula, we can also write the final answer as log⁡(log⁡cos⁡(0.2)cos⁡(0.1))\log\left(\log_{\cos (0.2)}\cos(0.1)\right).

∫03(x+1)9−x2 dx=∫039−x2 dx+∫03x9−x2 dx\int_0^3(x+1)\sqrt{9-x^2} \ \mathrm{d}x = \int_0^3\sqrt{9-x^2} \ \mathrm{d}x +\int_0^3x\sqrt{9-x^2} \ \mathrm{d}x

∫039−x2 dx=14(π⋅32)=94π\int_0^3\sqrt{9-x^2} \ \mathrm{d}x =\frac{1}{4}(\pi \cdot 3^2) = \frac{9}{4}\pi

∫03(x+1)9−x2 dx=94π+9\int_0^3(x+1)\sqrt{9-x^2} \ \mathrm{d}x = \frac{9}{4}\pi + 9

이다.

(b) 피적분함수는 N(x)/D(x)N(x)/D(x) 꼴이며 D(x)D(x) 는 이미 인수분해되어 있고 N(x)N(x) 의 차수가 더 낮다.

(a) If we expand the integrand, one part of it is quite familiar–a portion of a circle. So, we split the specified integral in two.

∫03(x+1)9−x2 dx=∫039−x2 dx+∫03x9−x2 dx\int_0^3(x+1)\sqrt{9-x^2} \ \mathrm{d}x = \int_0^3\sqrt{9-x^2} \ \mathrm{d}x +\int_0^3x\sqrt{9-x^2} \ \mathrm{d}x

The first piece represents the area above the xx–axis and below the curve y=9−x2y=\sqrt{9-x^2}, i.e. x2+y2=9x^2+y^2=9, with 0≤x≤30\le x\le 3. That's the area of one quadrant of a disk of radius 33. So

∫039−x2 dx=14(π⋅32)=94π\int_0^3\sqrt{9-x^2} \ \mathrm{d}x =\frac{1}{4}(\pi \cdot 3^2) = \frac{9}{4}\pi

For the second part, we substitute u=9−x2u=9-x^2, du=−2x dx\mathrm{d}u= -2x\,\mathrm{d}x. Note u(0)=9u(0)=9 and u(3)=0u(3)=0. So,

∫03x9−x2 dx=∫90u du−2=−12[u3/23/2]90=−12[−273/2]=9\begin{aligned} \int_0^3x\sqrt{9-x^2} \ \mathrm{d}x = \int_9^0\sqrt{u} \ \frac{\mathrm{d}u}{-2} =-\frac{1}{2}\left[\frac{u^{3/2}}{3/2}\right]_9^0 =-\frac{1}{2}\left[-\frac{27}{3/2}\right] =9 \end{aligned}

All together,

∫03(x+1)9−x2 dx=94π+9\int_0^3(x+1)\sqrt{9-x^2} \ \mathrm{d}x = \frac{9}{4}\pi + 9

(b) The integrand is of the form N(x)/D(x)N(x)/D(x) with D(x)D(x) already factored and N(x)N(x) of lower degree. We immediately look for a partial fractions decomposition:

4x+8(x−2)(x2+4)=Ax−2+Bx+Cx2+4.\frac{4x+8}{(x-2)(x^2+4)} = \frac{A}{x-2} + \frac{Bx+C}{x^2+4}.

Multiplying through by the denominator yields

4x+8=A(x2+4)+(Bx+C)(x−2)(∗)\begin{aligned} 4x+8 &= A(x^2+4) + (Bx+C)(x-2) \tag{$*$} \end{aligned}

Setting x=2x=2 we find:

8+8=A(4+4)+0  ⟹  16=8A  ⟹  A=2\begin{aligned} 8 +8 = A(4 + 4) + 0 \implies 16 =8A \implies A = 2 \end{aligned}

Substituting A=2A=2 in (∗)(*) gives

4x+8=A(x2+4)+(Bx+C)(x−2)  ⟹  −2x2+4x=(x−2)(Bx+C)  ⟹  (−2x)(x−2)=(Bx+C)(x−2)  ⟹  B=−2, C=0\begin{aligned} &&4x+8 &= A(x^2+4) + (Bx+C)(x-2) \\ &\implies & -2x^2+4 x &=(x-2)(Bx + C) \\ &\implies\qquad & (-2x)(x-2)&=(Bx + C)(x-2) \\ & \implies& B& =-2,~C=0 \end{aligned}

So we have found that A=2A=2, B=−2B=-2, and C=0C=0. Therefore

∫4x+8(x−2)(x2+4) dx=∫(red2x−2red−red2xx2+4) dx=2log⁡∣x−2∣−log⁡(x2+4)+C\begin{aligned} \int\frac{4x+8}{(x-2)(x^2+4)}\ \mathrm{d}x &= \int \bigg( \frac{{red}2}{x-2} {red}- \frac{{red}2x}{x^2+4} \bigg) \,\mathrm{d}x \\ &= 2 \log |x-2| - \log (x^2 + 4) + C \end{aligned}

Here the second integral was found just by guessing an antiderivative. Alternatively, one could use the substitution u=x2+4u=x^2+4, du=2x dx\mathrm{d}u=2x\,\mathrm{d}x.

(c) The given integral is improper, but only because of its infinite limits of integration. (The integrand is continuous for all real numbers.) So, we'll have to take two limits. Before we do that, though, let's find the antiderivative. We would like to use the substitution u=exu=e^x, du=ex dx\mathrm{d}u=e^x~\mathrm{d}x. That is, 1u du=dx\frac{1}{u}~\mathrm{d}u = \mathrm{d}x.

u=1−xu = \sqrt{1-x}, du=−121−xdx\mathrm{d}u = -\frac{1}{2\sqrt{1-x}}\mathrm{d}x 라 하자. 그러면 u2=1−xu^2=1-x 이므로 x=1−u2x = 1-u^2 이다.

It's not immediately clear where to start, but a common method we've seen is to use the denominator in a uu-substitution, especially when square roots are involved.

Let u=1−xu = \sqrt{1-x}, du=−121−xdx\mathrm{d}u = -\frac{1}{2\sqrt{1-x}}\mathrm{d}x. Then u2=1−xu^2=1-x, so x=1−u2x = 1-u^2.

∫x1−x dx=2∫x21−x dx=−2∫1−u2 duNow we’re back in familiar territory. Let u=sin⁡θ, du=cos⁡θ dθ.=−2∫1−sin⁡2θcos⁡θ dθ=−2∫cos⁡2θ dθ=−∫(1+cos⁡(2θ)) dθ=−θ−12sin⁡(2θ)+C=−θ−sin⁡θcos⁡θ+C=−arcsin⁡u−u1−u2+C![figure](clp/tikz/a3eaf2cde9.png) =−arcsin⁡(1−x)−1−xx+C(∗)\begin{aligned} \int \sqrt{\frac{x}{1-x}}~\mathrm{d}x&=2\int \frac{\sqrt{x}}{2\sqrt{1-x}}~\mathrm{d}x =- 2\int\sqrt{1-u^2}~\mathrm{d}u \\ \text{Now we're back in familiar territory. Let $u=\sin \theta$, $\mathrm{d}u=\cos \theta~\mathrm{d}\theta$.} \\ &=-2\int\sqrt{1-\sin^2 \theta }\cos\theta~\mathrm{d}\theta\\ &=-2\int\cos^2\theta~\mathrm{d}\theta\\ &=-\int \big(1+\cos(2\theta)\big)~\mathrm{d}\theta\\ &=-\theta - \frac{1}{2}\sin(2\theta)+C\\ &=-\theta - \sin\theta\cos\theta+C\\ &=-\arcsin u - u\sqrt{1-u^2}+C \tag{$*$}\\ \smash{ ![figure](clp/tikz/a3eaf2cde9.png) }\,&=-\arcsin (\sqrt{1-x})-\sqrt{1-x}\sqrt{x}+C \end{aligned}

In (∗*), to convert from θ\theta to uu, our substitution u=sin⁡θu=\sin\theta tells us θ=arcsin⁡u\theta = \arcsin u. To find cos⁡θ\cos \theta, we can either trace our work backwards to see that we already simplified 1−u2\sqrt{1-u^2} into cos⁡θ\cos\theta, or we can draw a right triangle with angle θ\theta and sin⁡θ=u\sin \theta=u, then use the Pythagorean theorem to find the length of the adjacent side of the triangle and cos⁡θ\cos\theta.

u=exu=e^x 라 하면 du=exdx\mathrm{d}u = e^x\mathrm{d}x 이다. x=0x=0 일 때 u=1u=1 이고, x=1x=1 일 때 u=eu=e 이다.

Let's use the substitution u=exu=e^x. There are a few reasons to think this is a good choice. It's an “inside function," in that if we let f(x)=exf(x)=e^x, then f(ex)=eexf(e^x)=e^{e^x}, which is a piece of our integrand. Also its derivative, exe^x, is multiplied by the rest of the integrand, since e2x=ex⋅exe^{2x}=e^x\cdot e^x .

Let u=exu=e^x, du=exdx\mathrm{d}u = e^x\mathrm{d}x. When x=0x=0, u=1u=1, and when x=1x=1, u=eu=e.

∫01e2xeexdx=∫01exeexexdx=∫1eueu duThis is more familiar. We use integration by parts with dv=eu du, v=eu. Conveniently, the “u" we brought in with the substitution is what we want to use for the “u" in integration by parts, so we don’t have to change the names of our variables.=[ueu]1e−∫1eeu du=e⋅ee−e−ee+e=ee(e−1)\begin{aligned} \displaystyle\int_0^1e^{2x}e^{e^x}\mathrm{d}x &= \int_0^1e^{x}e^{e^x}e^x\mathrm{d}x =\int_1^e ue^u~\mathrm{d}u \\ \text{This is more familiar. 처음에는 치환 u=x+1u=x+1 이 괜찮아 보이지만, 쉽게 적분할 수 있는 꼴이 되지는 않는다. 적분하려는 함수가 유리함수가 아니므로 부분분수 분해는 쓸 수 없다. 삼각치환 계열의 문제로도 보이지 않는다. 그러므로 부분적분을 생각해 보자. 피적분함수를 두 부분으로 나누는 방법은 여러 가지가 있다. 예를 들어 (x(x+1)2)(ex)\Big(\frac{x}{(x+1)^2}\Big)\Big(e^x\Big) 으로 볼 수도 있고, (xx+1)(exx+1)\Big(\frac{x}{x+1}\Big)\Big(\frac{e^x}{x+1}\Big) 으로 볼 수도 있다. 몇 차례 시행착오를 거쳐 u=xexu=xe^x, dv=(x+1)−2 dx\mathrm{d}v=(x+1)^{-2}~\mathrm{d}x 로 정한다. 그러면 du=ex(x+1)\mathrm{d}u=e^x(x+1) 이고 v=−1x+1v=\frac{-1}{x+1} 이다.

The substitution u=x+1u=x+1 looks promising at first, but doesn't result in something easily integrable. We can't use partial fractions because our integration isn't rational. This doesn't look like something from the trig-substitution family. So, let's think about integration by parts. There's a lot of different ways we could break up the integrand into two parts. For example, we could view it as (x(x+1)2)(ex)\Big(\frac{x}{(x+1)^2}\Big)\Big(e^x\Big), or we could view it as (xx+1)(exx+1)\Big(\frac{x}{x+1}\Big)\Big(\frac{e^x}{x+1}\Big). After some trial and error, we settle on u=xexu=xe^x and dv=(x+1)−2 dx\mathrm{d}v=(x+1)^{-2}~\mathrm{d}x. Then du=ex(x+1)\mathrm{d}u=e^x(x+1) and v=−1x+1v=\frac{-1}{x+1}.

If the unknown exponent gives you the jitters, think about what this looks like in easier cases. If nn is a whole number, the integrand is a polynomial. Not so scary, right? However, it's a little complicated to expand. (You can do it using the very handy binomial theorem.) Let's think of an easier way.

If we had simply the variable xx raised to the power nn, rather than the binomial x+ax+a, that might be nicer. So, let's use the substitution u=x+au=x+a, du=dx\mathrm{d}u=\mathrm{d}x. Note x=u−ax=u-a.

∫x(x+a)n dx=∫(u−a)un dx=∫(un+1−aun) duNow, if n≠−1 and n≠−2, we can just use the power rule:=u(n+2)n+2−aun+1n+1+C=(x+a)(n+2)n+2−a(x+a)n+1n+1+CIf n=−1, then∫x(x+a)n dx=∫(un+1−aun) du=∫(1−au) du=u−alog⁡∣u∣+C=(x+a)−alog⁡∣x+a∣+CIf n=−2, then∫x(x+a)n dx=∫(un+1−aun) du=∫(1u−au−2) du=log⁡∣u∣+au+C=log⁡∣x+a∣+ax+a+CAll together,∫x(x+a)n dx={(x+a)(n+2)n+2−a(x+a)n+1n+1+C if n≠−1,−2(x+a)−alog⁡∣a+x∣+C if n=−1log⁡∣x+a∣+ax+a+C if n=−2\begin{aligned} \int x(x+a)^n~\mathrm{d}x&=\int (u-a)u^n~\mathrm{d}x = \int \big(u^{n+1}-au^n\big)~\mathrm{d}u \\ \text{Now, if $n\neq -1$ and $n \neq -2$, we can just use the power rule:} \\ &=\frac{u^{(n+2)}}{n+2}-a\frac{u^{n+1}}{n+1}+C\\ &=\frac{(x+a)^{(n+2)}}{n+2}-a\frac{(x+a)^{n+1}}{n+1}+C \\ \text{If $n=-1$, then} \\ \int x(x+a)^n~\mathrm{d}x&=\int \big(u^{n+1}-au^n\big)~\mathrm{d}u =\int \left(1 - \frac{a}{u}\right)~\mathrm{d}u \\&= u - a\log|u|+C = (x+a)-a\log|x+a|+C \\ \text{If $n=-2$, then} \\ \int x(x+a)^n~\mathrm{d}x&=\int \big(u^{n+1}-au^n\big)~\mathrm{d}u=\int\left( \frac{1}{u} - au^{-2}\right)~\mathrm{d}u \\& = \log|u| + \frac{a}{u}+C= \log|x+a| + \frac{a}{x+a}+C \\ \text{All together,} \\ \int x(x+a)^n~\mathrm{d}x&=\begin{cases} \frac{(x+a)^{(n+2)}}{n+2}-a\frac{(x+a)^{n+1}}{n+1}+C&\text{ if } n \neq -1,-2\\ (x+a)-a\log|a+x|+C & \text{ if } n=-1\\ \log|x+a| +\frac{a}{x+a}+C& \text{ if } n=-2 \end{cases} \end{aligned}
