Match the curves in the graph to the following functions:

Since for any , we see that is just the constant function , so D matches to .
Since , functions and are the same. This is the only function out of the lot that grows as and shrinks as , so A matches to and .
This leaves B and C to match to and . Since , when , . So, matches to the function that grows more quickly to the right of the -axis: B matches to , and C matches to .

The graph below shows an exponential function and its derivative . Choose all the options that describe the constant .

First, let's consider the behaviour of exponential functions based on whether is greater or less than 1. As we know, and . Our function has and , so we conclude : thus and also hold. (We could have also seen that holds because is defined for all real numbers.)
It remains to decide whether is greater or less than . (If were equal to , then would be the same as .) We saw in the text that for the function . We know that . (Actually, we chose to be the number that has this property.) From our graph, we see that , so . In other words, ; so, . Thus holds.

The power rule tells us that . In this equation, the variable is the base, and the exponent is a constant. In the function , it's reversed: the variable is the exponent, and the base it a constant. So, the power rule does not apply.
The volume in decibels (dB) of a sound is given by the formula: where is the intensity of the sound and is the intensity of a standard baseline sound. (That is: is some constant.)
How much noise will ten speakers make, if each speaker produces 3dB of noise? What about one hundred speakers?
We are given that one speaker produces 3dB. So if is the power of one speaker,

The investment doubles when it hits $2000. So, we find the value of that gives :

Which of the following expressions, if any, is equivalent to ?
From our logarithm rules, we know that when is positive, . However, the expression does not always take on positive values, so (a) is not correct. (For instance, when , , while , which does not exist.)
Because is never negative, we notice that . When is nonzero, is positive, so our logarithm rules tell us . When is exactly zero, then both and do not exist. So, .
