Suppose you want to show that a point exists where the function f(x)=∣x∣f(x)=\sqrt{|x|} has a tangent line with slope 113\frac{1}{13}. Find the mistake(s) in the following work, and give a correct proof.

The function f(x)f(x) is continuous and differentiable over all real numbers, so the mean value theorem applies. f(−4)=2f(-4)=2 and f(9)=3f(9)=3, so by the mean value theorem, there exists some c∈(−4,9)c \in (-4,9) such that f′(x)=3−29−(−4)=113f'(x) = \dfrac{3-2}{9-(-4)}=\dfrac{1}{13}.

그러면 f′(1694)=113f'\left(\dfrac{169}{4}\right)=\dfrac{1}{13} 이다.

The function f(x)f(x) is continuous over all real numbers, but it is only differentiable when x≠0x \neq 0. So, if we want to apply the MVT, our interval must consist of only positive numbers or only negative numbers: the interval (−4,13)(-4,13) is not valid.

It is possible to use the mean value theorem to prove what we want: if a=1a=1 and b=144b=144, then f(x)f(x) is differentiable over the interval (1,144)(1,144) (since 0 is not contained in that interval), and f(x)f(x) is continuous everywhere, so by the mean value theorem there exists some point cc where f′(x)=∣144∣−∣1∣144−1=11143=113f'(x)=\dfrac{\sqrt{|144|}-\sqrt{|1|}}{144-1}=\dfrac{11}{143}=\dfrac{1}{13}.

That being said, an easier way to prove that a point exists is to simply find it–without using the MVT. When x>0x>0, f(x)=xf(x)=\sqrt{x}, so f′(x)=12xf'(x)=\dfrac{1}{2\sqrt {x}}. Then f′(1694)=113f'\left(\dfrac{169}{4}\right)=\dfrac{1}{13}.
