We can use partial fraction decomposition to break this into chunks that we can deal with. The denominator has a repeated linear factor, so it can be decomposed as the sum of constants divided by powers of that factor.
(x+1)33x2+4x+6⇒3x2+4x+6So, by matching coefficients:Therefore:(x+1)33x2+4x+6 Now, the integration is easy, with a substitution of u=x+1 and du=dx:∫(x+1)33x2+4x+6dx=x+1A+(x+1)2B+(x+1)3C=(x+1)3A(x+1)2+B(x+1)+C=A(x+1)2+B(x+1)+C=Ax2+(2A+B)x+(A+B+C)A=3,2A+B=4, and A+B+C=6A=3,B=−2,C=5=x+13+(x+1)2−2+(x+1)35=∫(x+13+(x+1)2−2+(x+1)35)dx=∫(3u−1−2u−2+5u−3)du=3log∣u∣+2u−1−25u−2+C=3log∣x+1∣+x+12−2(x+1)25+C
If the denominator were x2+1, the antiderivative would be arctangent. So, by completing the square, let's aim for the fraction to look like u2+11, for some u. This is a good strategy for integrating an irreducible quadratic under a constant.
First: complete the square∫x2+x+11dxSecond: get the denominator in the form u2+1. To do this, we need to fix the constantNow a quick wiggle to make that first part of the denominator into something squared again:Now we see that u=32x+31, du=32dx will do the job=∫x2+x+41+431dx=∫(x+21)2+431dx=∫((x+21)2+431)(3434)dx=34∫34⋅(x+21)2+11dx=34∫(32x+31)2+11dx=34∫u2+11⋅23du=32∫u2+11du=32arctanu+C=32arctan(32x+31)+C
We would like to not have that square root there. Luckily, there's a way of turning cosine into cosine squared: the identity cos(2x)=2cos2x−1. If we take 2x=t, then cost=2cos2(t/2)−1.
∫0π/2cost+1dtOver the interval [0,2π], cos(t/2)>0, so we can drop the absolute values.=∫0π/22cos2(t/2)dt=2∫0π/2∣cos(t/2)∣dt=2∫0π/2cos(t/2)dt=2[2sin(2t)]0π/2=22sin(4π)=2
dxd{log(cosx)}=cosx1⋅(−sinx)=cosx−sinx=−tanx
log(logcos(0.2)cos(0.1))

∫0.10.2log(cosx)tanxdx
It might not be immediately obvious how to proceed on this one, so this is another example of an integral where you should not be discouraged by finding methods that don't work. One thing that's worked for us in the past is to use a u-substitution with the denominator. With that in mind, let's find the derivative of the denominator.
dxd{log(cosx)}=cosx1⋅(−sinx)=cosx−sinx=−tanx
So, if we let u=log(cosx), we see −du=tanxdx, which will work for a substitution.
Things to notice: the integrand is only defined when log(cosx) exists AND is nonzero. So, for instance, it is not defined when x=0, because then logcosx=log1=0, and we can't divide by zero.
In the final simplification, since 0.1 and 0.2 are between 0 and π/2, the cosine term is positive but less than one, so log(cos0.1) and log(cos0.2) are both negative; then their quotient is positive, so we can drop the absolute value signs.
Using the base change formula, we can also write the final answer as
log(logcos(0.2)cos(0.1)).
du=2xdx 로 치환할 수도 있다.
(c)
즉 u1du=dx 이다.
(a)
If we expand the integrand, one part of it is quite familiar–a portion of a circle.
So, we split the specified integral in two.
∫03(x+1)9−x2dx=∫039−x2dx+∫03x9−x2dx
The first piece represents the area above the x–axis and below the curve
y=9−x2, i.e. x2+y2=9, with 0≤x≤3. That's the area of
one quadrant of a disk of radius 3. So
∫039−x2dx=41(π⋅32)=49π
For the second part, we substitute u=9−x2, du=−2xdx. Note
u(0)=9 and u(3)=0. So,
(b)
The integrand is of the form N(x)/D(x) with D(x) already factored
and N(x) of lower degree. We immediately look for a partial fractions decomposition:
Here the second integral was found just by guessing an antiderivative.
Alternatively, one could use the substitution u=x2+4,
du=2xdx.
(c)
The given integral is improper, but only because of its infinite limits of integration. (The integrand is continuous for all real numbers.) So, we'll have to take two limits. Before we do that, though, let's find the antiderivative. We would like to use the substitution u=ex, du=exdx. That is, u1du=dx.
∫ex+e−x1dxNow we can deal with the limits of integration.∫−∞∞ex+e−x1dx=∫u(u+u1)1du=∫u2+11=arctanu+C=arctan(ex)+C=∫−∞0ex+e−x1dx+∫0∞ex+e−x1dx=a→−∞lim[∫a0ex+e−x1dx]+b→∞lim[∫0bex+e−x1dx]=a→−∞lim[arctan(ex)]a0+b→∞lim[arctan(ex)]0b=a→−∞lim[arctan(e0)−arctan(ea)]+b→∞lim[arctan(eb)−arctan(e0)]=a→−∞lim[−arctan(ea)]+b→∞lim[arctan(eb)]=−arctan(0)+2π=2π
It's not immediately clear where to start, but a common method we've seen is to use the denominator in a u-substitution, especially when square roots are involved.
Let u=1−x, du=−21−x1dx. Then u2=1−x, so x=1−u2.
∫1−xxdxNow we’re back in familiar territory. Let u=sinθ, du=cosθdθ.=2∫21−xxdx=−2∫1−u2du=−2∫1−sin2θcosθdθ=−2∫cos2θdθ=−∫(1+cos(2θ))dθ=−θ−21sin(2θ)+C=−θ−sinθcosθ+C=−arcsinu−u1−u2+C=−arcsin(1−x)−1−xx+C(∗)
In (∗), to convert from θ to u, our substitution u=sinθ tells us θ=arcsinu. To find cosθ, we can either trace our work backwards to see that we already simplified 1−u2 into cosθ, or we can draw a right triangle with angle θ and sinθ=u, then use the Pythagorean theorem to find the length of the adjacent side of the triangle and cosθ.
u=ex 라 하면 du=exdx 이다. x=0 일 때 u=1 이고, x=1 일 때 u=e 이다.
Let's use the substitution u=ex. There are a few reasons to think this is a good choice. It's an “inside function," in that if we let f(x)=ex, then f(ex)=eex, which is a piece of our integrand. Also its derivative, ex, is multiplied by the rest of the integrand, since e2x=ex⋅ex .
Let u=ex, du=exdx. When x=0, u=1, and when x=1, u=e.
∫01e2xeexdxThis is more familiar. We use integration by parts with dv=eudu, v=eu. Conveniently, the “u" we brought in with the substitution is what we want to use for the “u" in integration by parts, so we don’t have to change the names of our variables.=∫01exeexexdx=∫1eueudu=[ueu]1e−∫1eeudu=e⋅ee−e−ee+e=ee(e−1)
The substitution u=x+1 looks promising at first, but doesn't result in something easily integrable. We can't use partial fractions because our integration isn't rational. This doesn't look like something from the trig-substitution family. So, let's think about integration by parts. There's a lot of different ways we could break up the integrand into two parts. For example, we could view it as ((x+1)2x)(ex), or we could view it as (x+1x)(x+1ex). After some trial and error, we settle on u=xex and dv=(x+1)−2dx. Then du=ex(x+1) and v=x+1−1.
It would be nice to use integration by parts with u=x, because then we would integrate ∫vdu, and du=dx. That is, the x would go away, and we'd be left with a pure trig integral. If we use u=x, then dv=cos2xsinx. We need to find v:
vNow we use integration by parts.∫cos2xxsinxdx=∫cos2xsinxdx=∫tanxsecxdx=secx=xsecx−∫secxdx=xsecx−log∣secx+tanx∣+C
그러므로 치환 u=x+a, du=dx 를 이용하자.
If the unknown exponent gives you the jitters, think about what this looks like in easier cases. If n is a whole number, the integrand is a polynomial. Not so scary, right? However, it's a little complicated to expand. (You can do it using the very handy binomial theorem.) Let's think of an easier way.
If we had simply the variable x raised to the power n, rather than the binomial x+a, that might be nicer. So, let's use the substitution u=x+a, du=dx. Note x=u−a.
∫x(x+a)ndxNow, if n=−1 and n=−2, we can just use the power rule:If n=−1, then∫x(x+a)ndxIf n=−2, then∫x(x+a)ndxAll together,∫x(x+a)ndx=∫(u−a)undx=∫(un+1−aun)du=n+2u(n+2)−an+1un+1+C=n+2(x+a)(n+2)−an+1(x+a)n+1+C=∫(un+1−aun)du=∫(1−ua)du=u−alog∣u∣+C=(x+a)−alog∣x+a∣+C=∫(un+1−aun)du=∫(u1−au−2)du=log∣u∣+ua+C=log∣x+a∣+x+aa+C=⎩⎨⎧n+2(x+a)(n+2)−an+1(x+a)n+1+C(x+a)−alog∣a+x∣+Clog∣x+a∣+x+aa+C if n=−1,−2 if n=−1 if n=−2

(a) WolframAlpha shows that
x4−1x3+x+1=−2(x2+1)1+4(x+1)1+4(x−1)3. Then, using standard antiderivatives,
∫x4−1x3+x+1dx=∫−2(x2+1)1+4(x+1)1+4(x−1)3dx=∫−2(x2+1)1dx+∫4(x+1)1dx+int4(x−1)3dx=−21arctan(x)+41ln∣x+1∣+43ln∣x−1∣+C
Directly asking WolframAlpha to integrate x4−1x3+x+1 yields
∫x4−1x3+x+1dx=41(3log(1−x)+log(x+1)−2arctanx)+C. By rearranging, distributing the 41, and noticing that WolframAlpha does not use absolute value with integrals involving the logarithm (as well as that ∣x−1∣=∣1−x∣), we see that these two results are the same.
(b) WolframAlpha shows that
x3−6x2+11x−6x5+x2+3=x2+6x+25+2(x−3)255−x−239+2(x−1)5. Then, using standard antiderivatives,

(c) WolframAlpha shows that
(x−3)3x2−x−1=x−31+(x−3)25+(x−3)35. Then, using standard antiderivatives,
∫(x−3)3x2−x−1dx=∫x−31+(x−3)25+(x−3)35dx=∫x−31dx+∫(x−3)25dx+∫(x−3)35dx=ln∣x−3∣+∫5(x−3)−2dx+∫5(x−3)−3dx=ln∣x−3∣−x−35−2(x−3)25+C. Directly asking WolframAlpha to integrate (x−3)3x2−x−1 yields
∫(x−3)3x2−x−1dx=log(x−3)−2(x−3)25(2x−5)+C. The logarithm part is the same, and since
−x−35−2(x−3)25=−2(x−3)25[2(x−3)+1]=−2(x−3)25(2x−5), we see that the rest of the result matches as well.

(a) We can't use u-substitution since there's not a function-derivative pair present (nor even a composite function). To show that integration by parts doesn't work is more complicated, but comes down to the fact that if we use the natural choice of u=x and dv=tan(x)dx, to do so requires us to evaluate the integral ∫ln(sec(x))dx, which appears not to have an elementary antiderivative. If we try instead u=tan(x) and dv=xdx, then we have to evaluate the integral ∫x2⋅sec2(x)dx which is more complicated than the integral we started with and would seem to send us back where we started if we attempt integration by parts.
(b) We use computational technology to generate the following estimates, which are reported to 5 decimal places of accuracy:

R4=0.64827
M4=0.41550

S8=32M4+T4=0.42820
(c) From the values of these estimates or from the graph of f(x)=xtan(x), we can observe that f is always increasing and concave up on the interval. Thus, L4 and M4 are underestimates while R4 and M4 are overestimates.

(a) Because L4=7.23>6.75=R4 and we know the function is always increasing or always decreasing, for the left endpoint rule to give a value greater than the right endpoint rule, f must be always decreasing.
(b) From the given data, we know that
T4=2L4+R4=27.23+6.75=6.99. Since M4=7.05, it follows that
R4<T4<M4<L4. In particular, we know that the function is not only always decreasing on the interval, but it also concave down. Because the concavity is constant, it follows that if the trapezoid rule under-estimates the true value, then the midpoint rule must over-estimate the true value (or vice-versa). Since T4<M4, this means that
T4<∫36f(x)dx<M4
and that f must be concave down on the interval.

∫e∞x(ln(x))p1dx=b→∞lim∫ebx(ln(x))p1dx=b→∞lim∫1ln(b)up1du=b→∞lim∫1ln(b)u−pdu=b→∞lim(−p+1u−p+1)1ln(b)=1−p1b→∞lim((ln(b))1−p−1)=1.p<1 이면 1−p>0 이고

p>1 이면 1−p<0 이고
1−p1b→∞lim((ln(b))1−p−1)=1−p1b→∞lim((ln(b))p−11−1)=(1−p1)(0−1)=p−11

∫01ln(x)dx=a→0+lim∫a1ln(x)dx=a→0+lim(xln(x)a1−∫a1dx)=a→0+lim(−aln(a)−xln(a)0)=a→0+lim(−aln(a)−(1−a))=a→0+lim(−aln(a))−1.
a→0+lim(−aln(a))=a→0+lim(a1−ln(a)), 이고, 이 뒤의 극한은 ∞∞ 꼴이다.
a→0+lim(a1−ln(a))=a→0+lim(−a21−a1)=a→0+lima=0
∫01ln(x)dx=a→0+lim(−aln(a))−1,
(a) We write the improper integral as a limit and use the substitution u=ln(x) and du=x1dx to evaluate the definite integral, then take the limit:
∫e∞xln(x)dx=b→∞lim∫ebxln(x)dx=b→∞lim∫1ln(b)udu=b→∞lim(2u2)1ln(b)=b→∞lim(2(ln(b))2−21)=∞. So the improper integral ∫e∞xln(x)dx diverges.
(b) We write the improper integral as a limit and use the substitution u=ln(x) and du=x1dx to revaluate the definite integral, then take the limit:.
∫e∞xln(x)1dx=b→∞lim∫ebxln(x)1dx=b→∞lim∫1ln(b)u1du=b→∞lim(ln(∣u∣))1ln(b)=b→∞lim(ln(∣ln(b)∣)−ln(1))=∞. So the improper integral ∫e∞xln(x)1dx diverges.
(c) We again write the improper integral as a limit and use the substitution u=ln(x) and du=x1dx to evaluate the definite integral, then take the limit:
∫e∞x(ln(x))21dx=b→∞lim∫ebx(ln(x))21dx=b→∞lim∫1ln(b)u21du=b→∞lim(−u−1)1ln(b)=b→∞lim(−ln(b)1−(−1))=1. So the improper integral ∫e∞x(ln(x))21dx converges to 1.
(d) We again write the improper integral as a limit and use the substitution u=ln(x) and du=x1dx to rewrite the definite integral. If p=1, then the integral diverges by part (b). If p=1, we have
∫e∞x(ln(x))p1dx=b→∞lim∫ebx(ln(x))p1dx=b→∞lim∫1ln(b)up1du=b→∞lim∫1ln(b)u−pdu=b→∞lim(−p+1u−p+1)1ln(b)=1−p1b→∞lim((ln(b))1−p−1)=1.
If p<1, then 1−p>0 and
1−p1b→∞lim((ln(b))1−p−1)=(1−p1)∞=∞. In this case the improper integral ∫e∞x(ln(x))p1dx diverges.
If p>1, then 1−p<0 and
1−p1b→∞lim((ln(b))1−p−1)=1−p1b→∞lim((ln(b))p−11−1)=(1−p1)(0−1)=p−11
In this case the improper integral ∫e∞x(ln(x))p1dx converges to p−11.
Thus, the improper integral ∫e∞x(ln(x))p1dx diverges if p≤1 and converges to p−11 if p>1.
(e) This integral is improper since the integrand is undefined at x=0. So we write the improper integral as a limit, use the substitution u=ln(x) and du=x1dx to evaluate the definite integral, then take the limit:
∫01xln(x)dx=a→0+lim∫a1xln(x)dx=a→0+lim∫ln(a)0udu=a→0+lim(2u2)ln(a)0=a→0+lim(−2(ln(a))2)=−∞. So the improper integral ∫01xln(x)dx diverges.
(f) This integral is improper since the integrand is undefined at x=0. So we write the improper integral as a limit, then use parts with u=ln(x), du=x1dx, dv=dx, and v=x to evaluate the definite integral, then take the limit:
∫01ln(x)dx=a→0+lim∫a1ln(x)dx=a→0+lim(xln(x)a1−∫a1dx)=a→0+lim(−aln(a)−xln(a)0)=a→0+lim(−aln(a)−(1−a))=a→0+lim(−aln(a))−1. The limit lima→0+(−aln(a)) has the form 0×∞, which is indeterminate, so we need to rewrite it in a form in which we can apply L'Hopital's Rule. Now,
a→0+lim(−aln(a))=a→0+lim(a1−ln(a)), and this latter limit is of the form ∞∞. Applying L'Hopital's Rule gives us
a→0+lim(a1−ln(a))=a→0+lim(−a21−a1)=a→0+lima=0
Returning to our earlier established equality that
∫01ln(x)dx=a→0+lim(−aln(a))−1, this most recent limit shows that the improper integral ∫01ln(x)dx converges to −1.
