Approximate the function with a rational function by approximating the integral using Simpson's rule. Your rational function should approximate with an error of not more than 0.1 for any in the interval .

Before we can take our Simpson's rule approximation of , we need to know how many intervals to use. That means we need to bound our error, which means we need to bound .
So, over the interval , .
Now, we can find an appropriate to ensure our error will be be less than 0.1 for any in :
Since must be even, is enough intervals to guarantee our error is not too high for any in . Now we find our Simpson's rule approximation with , , , and . The points where we evaluate are:

Below is a graph of our approximation and natural logarithm on the same axes. The natural logarithm function is shown red and dashed, while our approximating function is solid blue. Our approximation appears to be quite accurate for small, positive values of .

It might not be immediately obvious how to proceed on this one, so this is another example of an integral where you should not be discouraged by finding methods that don't work. One thing that's worked for us in the past is to use a -substitution with the denominator. With that in mind, let's find the derivative of the denominator.
So, if we let ), we see , which will work for a substitution.
Things to notice: the integrand is only defined when exists AND is nonzero. So, for instance, it is not defined when , because then , and we can't divide by zero.
In the final simplification, since and are between 0 and , the cosine term is positive but less than one, so and are both negative; then their quotient is positive, so we can drop the absolute value signs.
Using the base change formula, we can also write the final answer as .

(a) If we expand the integrand, one part of it is quite familiar–a portion of a circle. So, we split the specified integral in two.
The first piece represents the area above the –axis and below the curve , i.e. , with . That's the area of one quadrant of a disk of radius . So
For the second part, we substitute , . Note and . So,
All together,
(b) The integrand is of the form with already factored and of lower degree. We immediately look for a partial fractions decomposition:
Multiplying through by the denominator yields
Setting we find:
Substituting in gives
So we have found that , , and . Therefore
Here the second integral was found just by guessing an antiderivative. Alternatively, one could use the substitution , .
(c) The given integral is improper, but only because of its infinite limits of integration. (The integrand is continuous for all real numbers.) So, we'll have to take two limits. Before we do that, though, let's find the antiderivative. We would like to use the substitution , . That is, .

It's not immediately clear where to start, but a common method we've seen is to use the denominator in a -substitution, especially when square roots are involved.
Let , . Then , so .
In (), to convert from to , our substitution tells us . To find , we can either trace our work backwards to see that we already simplified into , or we can draw a right triangle with angle and , then use the Pythagorean theorem to find the length of the adjacent side of the triangle and .

Let's use the substitution . There are a few reasons to think this is a good choice. It's an “inside function," in that if we let , then , which is a piece of our integrand. Also its derivative, , is multiplied by the rest of the integrand, since .

The substitution looks promising at first, but doesn't result in something easily integrable. We can't use partial fractions because our integration isn't rational. This doesn't look like something from the trig-substitution family. So, let's think about integration by parts. There's a lot of different ways we could break up the integrand into two parts. For example, we could view it as , or we could view it as . After some trial and error, we settle on and . Then and .

If the unknown exponent gives you the jitters, think about what this looks like in easier cases. If is a whole number, the integrand is a polynomial. Not so scary, right? However, it's a little complicated to expand. (You can do it using the very handy binomial theorem.) Let's think of an easier way.
If we had simply the variable raised to the power , rather than the binomial , that might be nicer. So, let's use the substitution , . Note .
