Let f(x)=2x+sin⁡xf(x)=2x+\sin x. What is the largest interval containing x=0x=0 over which f(x)f(x) is one–to–one? What are the domain and range of f−1(x)f^{-1}(x)?

롤의 정리에 의해, 서로 다른 aa 와 bb 에 대해 f(a)=f(b)f(a)=f(b) 이면 aa 와 bb 사이의 어떤 cc 에 대해 f′(c)=0f'(c)=0 이다.

If 2x+sin⁡x2x+\sin x is one–to–one over an interval, it never takes the same value for two distinct numbers in that interval. By Rolle's Theorem, if f(a)=f(b)f(a)=f(b) for distinct aa and bb, then f′(c)=0f'(c)=0 for some cc between aa and bb. However, f′(x)=2+cos⁡xf'(x)=2+\cos x, which is never zero. In fact, f′(x)≥1f'(x)\ge 1 for all xx, so f(x)f(x) is strictly increasing over its entire domain. Therefore, our function ff never takes the same value twice, so it is one–to–one over all the real numbers, (−∞,∞)(-\infty,\infty).

When we define the inverse function f−1(x)f^{-1}(x), the domain of ff is the range of f−1f^{-1}, and vice-versa. In general, we might have to restrict the domain of ff (and hence the range of f−1f^{-1}) to an interval where ff is one–to–one, but in our case, this isn't necessary. So, the range of f−1f^{-1} is (−∞,∞)(-\infty,\infty) and the domain of f−1f^{-1} is the range of ff: (−∞,∞)(-\infty,\infty).

롤의 정리에 의해, 서로 다른 aa, bb 에 대해 f(a)=f(b)f(a)=f(b) 이면 aa 와 bb 사이의 어떤 cc 에 대해 f′(c)=0f'(c)=0 이다. f′(x)=12+cos⁡xf'(x)=\frac{1}{2}+\cos x 이므로, 어떤 정수 nn 에 대해 x=2nπ±2π3x=2n\pi\pm\frac{2\pi}{3} 일 때 f′(x)=0f'(x)=0 이다. 따라서 특히 aa 와 bb 가 구간 [−2π3,2π3]\left[-\frac{2\pi}{3},\frac{2\pi}{3}\right] 의 서로 다른 수이면, aa 와 bb 사이에 있는 모든 cc (양 끝은 제외)에 대해 f′(c)≠0f'(c) \neq 0 이므로 롤의 정리에 의해 f(a)≠f(b)f(a) \neq f(b) 이다. 그러므로 f(x)f(x) 는 구간 [−2π3,2π3]\left[-\frac{2\pi}{3},\frac{2\pi}{3}\right] 에서 일대일함수이다.

역함수 f−1(x)f^{-1}(x) 를 정의할 때, 먼저 ff 를 [−2π3,2π3]\left[-\frac{2\pi}{3},\frac{2\pi}{3}\right] 로 제한한다. 그러면 f−1f^{-1} 의 치역도 [−2π3,2π3]\left[-\frac{2\pi}{3},\frac{2\pi}{3}\right] 이다. f−1f^{-1} 의 정의역은 이 구간에서 ff 의 치역이므로 [−(π3+32),(π3+32)]\left[-\left(\frac{\pi}{3}+\frac{\sqrt{3}}{2}\right),\left(\frac{\pi}{3}+\frac{\sqrt{3}}{2}\right)\right] 이다.

If f(x)=x2+sin⁡xf(x)=\dfrac{x}{2}+\sin x is one–to–one over an interval, it never takes the same value for two distinct numbers in that interval. By Rolle's Theorem, if f(a)=f(b)f(a)=f(b) for distinct aa and bb, then f′(c)=0f'(c)=0 for some cc between aa and bb. Since f′(x)=12+cos⁡xf'(x)=\frac{1}{2}+\cos x, f′(x)=0f'(x)=0 when x=2nπ±2π3x=2n\pi\pm\frac{2\pi}{3} for some integer nn. So, in particular, if aa and bb are distinct numbers in the interval [−2π3,2π3]\left[-\frac{2\pi}{3},\frac{2\pi}{3}\right], then for every cc strictly between aa and bb, f′(c)≠0f'(c) \neq 0, so by Rolle's Theorem f(a)≠f(b)f(a) \neq f(b). Therefore f(x)f(x) is one–to–one on the interval [−2π3,2π3]\left[-\frac{2\pi}{3},\frac{2\pi}{3}\right].

We should also show that the interval [−2π3,2π3]\left[-\frac{2\pi}{3},\frac{2\pi}{3}\right] cannot be extended to a larger interval over which f(x)f(x) is still one–to–one. Consider the derivative f′(x)=12+cos⁡xf'(x) = \frac{1}{2}+\cos x. For all −2π3<x<2π3-\frac{2\pi}{3} < x < \frac{2\pi}{3}, we have cos⁡x>−12\cos x > -\frac{1}{2} (sketch the graph of cos⁡x\cos x yourself) so that f′(x)>0f'(x)>0 and f(x)f(x) is increasing. But at x=2π3x=\frac{2\pi}{3}, f′(x)=0f'(x)=0, and then for xx a bit bigger than 2π3\frac{2\pi}{3} we have cos⁡x<−12\cos x < -\frac{1}{2} so that f′(x)<0f'(x)<0 and f(x)f(x) is decreasing. So the graph “reverses direction", and f(x)f(x) repeats values. (See the graph of y=f(x)y=f(x) below.) The same is true for xx a little smaller than −2π3.-\frac{2\pi}{3}.

figure

When we define the inverse function f−1(x)f^{-1}(x), first we restrict ff to [−2π3,2π3]\left[-\frac{2\pi}{3},\frac{2\pi}{3}\right]. Then the range of f−1f^{-1} is also [−2π3,2π3]\left[-\frac{2\pi}{3},\frac{2\pi}{3}\right]. The domain of f−1f^{-1} is the range of ff over this interval, so [−(π3+32),(π3+32)]\left[-\left(\frac{\pi}{3}+\frac{\sqrt{3}}{2}\right),\left(\frac{\pi}{3}+\frac{\sqrt{3}}{2}\right)\right].

Suppose f(x)f(x) and g(x)g(x) are functions that are continuous over the interval [a,b][a,b] and differentiable over the interval (a,b)(a,b). Suppose further that f(a)<g(a)f(a) < g(a) and g(b)<f(b)g(b)< f(b). Show that there exists some c∈[a,b]c \in [a,b] with f′(c)>g′(c)f'(c)>g'(c).

h(x)=f(x)−g(x)h(x)=f(x)-g(x) 로 놓으면 h(a)=f(a)−g(a)<0h(a)=f(a)-g(a)<0 이고 h(b)=f(b)−g(b)>0h(b)=f(b)-g(b)>0 임을 알 수 있다. hh 는 [a,b][a,b] 에서 연속이고 (a,b)(a,b) 에서 미분가능한 두 함수의 차이므로 hh 도 [a,b][a,b] 에서 연속이고 (a,b)(a,b) 에서 미분가능하다. 따라서 평균값 정리에 의해 h′(c)=h(b)−h(a)b−ah'(c)=\frac{h(b)-h(a)}{b-a} 인 c∈(a,b)c \in (a,b) 가 존재한다. (a,b)(a,b) 가 구간이므로 b>ab>a 이고, 따라서 위 식의 분모는 양수이다. 또 h(b)>0>h(a)h(b)>0>h(a) 이므로 위 식의 분자도 양수이다. 그러므로 어떤 c∈(a,b)c \in (a,b) 에 대해 h′(c)>0h'(c)>0 이다. h′(c)=f′(c)−g′(c)h'(c)=f'(c)-g'(c) 이므로, 어떤 c∈(a,b)c \in (a,b) 에 대해 f′(c)>g′(c)f'(c)>g'(c) 라는 결론을 얻는다.

Define h(x)=f(x)−g(x)h(x)=f(x)-g(x), and notice h(a)=f(a)−g(a)<0h(a)=f(a)-g(a)<0 and h(b)=f(b)−g(b)>0h(b)=f(b)-g(b)>0. Since hh is the difference of two functions that are continuous over [a,b][a,b] and differentiable over (a,b)(a,b), also hh is continuous over [a,b][a,b] and differentiable over (a,b)(a,b). So, by the Mean Value Theorem, there exists some c∈(a,b)c \in (a,b) with h′(c)=h(b)−h(a)b−ah'(c)=\frac{h(b)-h(a)}{b-a} Since (a,b)(a,b) is an interval, b>ab>a, so the denominator of the above expression is positive; since h(b)>0>h(a)h(b)>0>h(a), also the numerator of the above expression is positive. So, h′(c)>0h'(c)>0 for some c∈(a,b)c \in (a,b). Since h′(c)=f′(c)−g′(c)h'(c)=f'(c)-g'(c), we conclude f′(c)>g′(c)f'(c)>g'(c) for some c∈(a,b)c \in (a,b).

서로 다른 두 근 a<ba<b 마다 롤의 정리에 의해 f′(c)=0f'(c)=0 인 c∈(a,b)c \in (a,b) 가 존재한다.

Since f(x)f(x) is differentiable over all real numbers, it is also continuous over all real numbers. We claim that f(x)f(x) cannot have four or more distinct roots. For every two distinct roots a<ba<b, Rolle's Theorem tells us there is a c∈(a,b)c \in (a,b) such that f′(c)=0f'(c)=0: that is, cc is a root of f′f'. Since f′f' has only two distinct roots, ff can have at most three distinct roots.

How many roots does f(x)=sin⁡x+x2+5x+1f(x)=\sin x + x^2 + 5x +1 have?

따라서 f(x)f(x) 의 근은 구간 [−5,−5−172]\left[-5,\frac{-5-\sqrt{17}}{2}\right] 와 [−5+172,0]\left[\frac{-5+\sqrt{17}}{2},0\right] 에만 있다.
  • f(−5)=sin⁡(−5)+1>0f(-5)=\sin(-5)+1 > 0 이고, f(−5−172)=sin⁡(−5−172)−1<0f\left(\frac{-5-\sqrt{17}}{2}\right)=\sin\left(\frac{-5-\sqrt{17}}{2}\right)-1 <0 이다. 따라서 사잇값 정리에 의해 어떤 c∈(−5,−5−172)c \in \left(-5,\frac{-5-\sqrt{17}}{2}\right) 에 대해 f(c)=0f(c)=0 이다.
  • f(0)=1>0f(0)=1>0 이고, f(−5+172)=sin⁡(−5+172)−1<0f\left(\frac{-5+\sqrt{17}}{2}\right)=\sin\left(\frac{-5+\sqrt{17}}{2}\right)-1<0 이다. 따라서 사잇값 정리에 의해 어떤 c∈(−5+172,0)c \in \left(\frac{-5+\sqrt{17}}{2},0\right) 에 대해 f(c)=0f(c)=0 이다.
그러면 구간 [−5,−5−172]\left[-5,\frac{-5-\sqrt{17}}{2}\right] 에 근이 두 개 있거나 또는 구간 [−5+172,0]\left[\frac{-5+\sqrt{17}}{2},0\right] 에 근이 두 개 있다. f(x)f(x) 는 모든 실수에서 미분가능하므로, 롤의 정리에 의해 f′(x)f'(x) 는 (−5,−5−172)\left(-5,\frac{-5-\sqrt{17}}{2}\right) 또는 (−5+172,0)\left(\frac{-5+\sqrt{17}}{2},0\right) 에서 근을 가진다. 그러나 f′(x)f'(x) 의 모든 근은 구간 [−3,−2][-3,-2] 안에 있고, 이 구간은 (−5,−5−172)\left(-5,\frac{-5-\sqrt{17}}{2}\right) 및 (−5+172,0)\left(\frac{-5+\sqrt{17}}{2},0\right) 와 공통인 점이 없으므로 이는 불가능하다.

We are asked to find the number of solutions to the equation x2+5x+1=−sin⁡xx^2+5x+1 = -\sin x. The figure below contains the graphs of y=x2+5x+1y=x^2+5x+1 and y=−sin⁡xy=-\sin x. The solutions to x2+5x+1=−sin⁡xx^2+5x+1 = -\sin x are precisely the xx's where y=x2+5x+1y=x^2+5x+1 and y=−sin⁡xy=-\sin x cross.

figure

From the figure, it sure looks like there are two crossings. Since the function −sin⁡x-\sin x has range [−1,1][-1,1], if the two functions cross, then also −1≤x2+5x+1≤1-1 \leq x^2+5x+1\leq 1 . This portion of the quadratic function is highlighted in blue in the figure. The xx coordinates of the end points of the blue arcs are found by solving x2+5x+1=±1x^2+5x+1 = \pm1, i.e. x=0x=0, −5-5, and (using the quadratic equation) x=−5±172x= \frac{-5\pm\sqrt{17}}{2}.

We are now in a position to exploit the intuition that we have built using the above figure to write a concise argument showing that f(x)f(x) has exactly two roots. Remember that, in general, if we want to show that a function has nn roots, we need to show that there exist nn distinct roots somewhere, and that there do not exist n+1n+1 distinct roots. This argument is given below, in blue text.

  • f(x)f(x) is continuous over all real numbers
  • f(x)=0f(x)=0 only when −sin⁡x=x2+5x+1-\sin x=x^2+5x+1, which only happens when ∣x2+5x+1∣≤1|x^2+5x+1| \leq 1. Thus, f(x)f(x) only has roots in the intervals [−5,−5−172]\left[-5,\frac{-5-\sqrt{17}}{2}\right] and [−5+172,0]\left[\frac{-5+\sqrt{17}}{2},0\right].
  • f(−5)=sin⁡(−5)+1>0f(-5)=\sin(-5)+1 > 0, and f(−5−172)=sin⁡(−5−172)−1<0f\left(\frac{-5-\sqrt{17}}{2}\right)=\sin\left(\frac{-5-\sqrt{17}}{2}\right)-1 <0. So, by the IVT, f(c)=0f(c)=0 for some c∈(−5,−5−172)c \in \left(-5,\frac{-5-\sqrt{17}}{2}\right).
  • f(0)=1>0f(0)=1>0, and f(−5+172)=sin⁡(−5+172)−1<0f\left(\frac{-5+\sqrt{17}}{2}\right)=\sin\left(\frac{-5+\sqrt{17}}{2}\right)-1<0. So, by the IVT, f(c)=0f(c)=0 for some c∈(−5+172,0)c \in \left(\frac{-5+\sqrt{17}}{2},0\right).
  • f′(x)=cos⁡x+2x+5f'(x)=\cos x + 2x + 5. If f′(x)=0f'(x)=0, then 2x+5=−cos⁡x2x+5=-\cos x, so ∣2x+5∣≤1|2x+5| \leq 1. So, the only interval that can contain roots of f′(x)f'(x) is [−3,−2][-3,-2].
  • Suppose f(x)f(x) has more than two roots. Then it has two roots in the interval [−5,−5−172]\left[-5,\frac{-5-\sqrt{17}}{2}\right] OR it has two roots in the interval [−5+172,0]\left[\frac{-5+\sqrt{17}}{2},0\right]. Since f(x)f(x) is differentiable for all real numbers, Rolle's Theorem tells us that f′(x)f'(x) has a root in (−5,−5−172)\left(-5,\frac{-5-\sqrt{17}}{2}\right) or in (−5+172,0)\left(\frac{-5+\sqrt{17}}{2},0\right). However, since all roots of f′(x)f'(x) are in the interval [−3,−2][-3,-2], and this interval shares no points with (−5,−5−172)\left(-5,\frac{-5-\sqrt{17}}{2}\right) or (−5+172,0)\left(\frac{-5+\sqrt{17}}{2},0\right), this cannot be the case. Therefore f(x)f(x) does not have more than two roots.

figure

  • Since f(x)f(x) has at least two roots, and not more than two roots, f(x)f(x) has exactly two roots.
