L1: <x , y , z−1>=t<1,0,0>L2: <x , y , z−2>=t<0,1,0>L3: <x , y , z−3>=t<1,1,0>L4: <x , y , z−4>=t<1,−1,0>\begin{aligned} L_1:\ \left< x\,,\,y\,,\,z-1\right> &= t\left< 1,0,0\right> & L_2:\ \left< x\,,\,y\,,\,z-2\right> &= t\left< 0,1,0\right> \\ L_3:\ \left< x\,,\,y\,,\,z-3\right> &= t\left< 1,1,0\right> & L_4:\ \left< x\,,\,y\,,\,z-4\right> &= t\left< 1,-1,0\right> \end{aligned}

  • L1L_1 과 L2L_2 는 평행하지 않다. 왜냐하면 <1,0,0>×<0,1,0>=<0,0,1>≠0\left< 1,0,0\right>\times \left< 0,1,0\right>=\left< 0,0,1\right>\ne\mathbf{0} 이기 때문이다.
  • L1L_1 과 L3L_3 은 평행하지 않다. 왜냐하면 <1,0,0>×<1,1,0>=<0,0,1>≠0\left< 1,0,0\right>\times \left< 1,1,0\right>=\left< 0,0,1\right>\ne\mathbf{0} 이기 때문이다.
  • L1L_1 과 L4L_4 는 평행하지 않다. 왜냐하면 <1,0,0>×<1,−1,0>=<0,0,−1>≠0\left< 1,0,0\right>\times \left< 1,-1,0\right>=\left< 0,0,-1\right>\ne\mathbf{0} 이기 때문이다.
  • L2L_2 와 L3L_3 은 평행하지 않다. 왜냐하면 <0,1,0>×<1,1,0>=<0,0,−1>≠0\left< 0,1,0\right>\times \left< 1,1,0\right>=\left< 0,0,-1\right>\ne\mathbf{0} 이기 때문이다.
  • L2L_2 와 L4L_4 는 평행하지 않다. 왜냐하면 <0,1,0>×<1,−1,0>=<0,0,−1>≠0\left< 0,1,0\right>\times \left< 1,-1,0\right>=\left< 0,0,-1\right>\ne\mathbf{0} 이기 때문이다.
  • L3L_3 과 L4L_4 는 평행하지 않다. 왜냐하면 <1,1,0>×<1,−1,0>=<0,0,−2>≠0\left< 1,1,0\right>\times \left< 1,-1,0\right>=\left< 0,0,-2\right>\ne\mathbf{0} 이기 때문이다.

(a) 방정식 <x,y,z>=<−3,2,4>+t<−4,2,1>\left< x,y,z\right> = \left< -3,2,4\right>+t\left< -4,2,1\right> 의 매개변수 tt 의 값이 방정식 <x,y,z>=<2,1,2>+t<1,1,−1>\left< x,y,z\right> = \left< 2,1,2\right>+t\left< 1,1,-1\right> 의 매개변수 tt 의 값과 같을 필요는 없다. 따라서 첫 번째 방정식의 매개변수 이름을 tt 에서 ss 로 바꾸는 것이 훨씬 안전하다. 점 (x,y,z)(x,y,z) 가 두 직선 위에 모두 놓이려면

<−3,2,4>+s<−4,2,1>=<2,1,2>+t<1,1,−1>\left< -3,2,4\right>+s\left< -4,2,1\right> = \left< 2,1,2\right>+t\left< 1,1,-1\right>

−4s−t=52s−t=−1s+t=−2\begin{aligned} -4s -t &= 5\\ 2s -t &= -1\\ s +t &= -2 \end{aligned}

마지막 두 식을 더하면 3s=−33s=-3 이므로 s=−1s=-1 이다. 이를 마지막 식에 대입하면 t=−1t=-1 이다. s=t=−1s=t=-1 은 세 식을 모두 만족하므로 <x,y,z>=<−3,2,4>−<−4,2,1>=<1,0,3>\left< x,y,z\right>=\left< -3,2,4\right>-\left< -4,2,1\right>=\left< 1,0,3\right> 은 두 직선 위에 모두 놓인다. 두 직선을 모두 포함하는 평면은 두 방향 벡터 <−4,2,1>\left< -4,2,1\right> 과 <1,1,−1>\left< 1,1,-1\right> 에 모두 평행해야 한다. 따라서 이 평면의 법선 벡터는 두 방향 벡터에 수직이어야 하고, 즉 <−4,2,1>×<1,1,−1>=<−3,−3,−6>=−3<1,1,2>\left< -4,2,1\right>\times\left< 1,1,-1\right>=\left< -3,-3,-6\right>=-3\left< 1,1,2\right> 에 평행해야 한다. 이 평면은 (1,0,3)(1,0,3) 을 지나고 <1,1,2>\left< 1,1,2\right> 에 수직이다. 평면의 방정식은 <1,1,2>⋅<x−1,y,z−3>=0\left< 1,1,2\right>\cdot\left< x-1,y,z-3\right>=0, 즉 x+y+2z=7x+y+2z=7 이다. 이는 <−3,2,4>+s<−4,2,1>\left< -3,2,4\right>+s\left< -4,2,1\right> 과 <2,1,2>+t<1,1,−1>\left< 2,1,2\right>+t\left< 1,1,-1\right> 이 각각 모든 ss 와 tt 에 대해 x+y+2z=7x+y+2z=7 을 만족함을 확인하여 검증할 수 있다.

<−3,2,4>+s<−4,2,1>=<2,1,−1>+t<1,1,−1>\left< -3,2,4\right>+s\left< -4,2,1\right> = \left< 2,1,-1\right>+t\left< 1,1,-1\right>

−4s−t=52s−t=−1s+t=−5\begin{aligned} -4s -t &= 5\\ 2s -t &= -1\\ s +t &= -5 \end{aligned}

<−3,2,4>+s<−2,−2,2>=<2,1,−1>+t<1,1,−1>\left< -3,2,4\right>+s\left< -2,-2,2\right> = \left< 2,1,-1\right>+t\left< 1,1,-1\right>

−2s−t=5−2s−t=−12s+t=−5\begin{aligned} -2s -t &= 5\\ -2s -t &= -1\\ 2s +t &= -5 \end{aligned}

첫 번째 식과 두 번째 식은 분명히 모순이다. 두 직선은 만나지 않는다. 두 직선을 모두 포함하는 평면은 <1,1,−1>\left< 1,1,-1\right> 에 평행해야 하고(따라서 <−2,−2,2>=−2<1,1,−1>\left< -2,-2,2\right>=-2\left< 1,1,-1\right> 에도 자동으로 평행하다), 또한 첫 번째 직선 위의 점 (−3,2,4)(-3,2,4) 에서 두 번째 직선 위의 점 (2,1,−1)(2,1,-1) 로 향하는 벡터에도 평행해야 한다. 이 벡터는 <5,−1,−5>\left< 5,-1,-5\right> 이다. 따라서 평면의 법선 벡터는 <5,−1,−5>×<1,1,−1>=<6,0,6>=6<1,0,1>\left< 5,-1,-5\right>\times\left< 1,1,-1\right>=\left< 6,0,6\right>=6\left< 1,0,1\right> 이다. (2,1,−1)(2,1,-1) 을 지나고 <1,0,1>\left< 1,0,1\right> 에 수직인 평면은 <1,0,1>⋅<x−2,y−1,z+1>=0\left< 1,0,1\right>\cdot\left< x-2,y-1,z+1\right>=0, 즉 x+z=1x+z=1 이다.

(d) 이번에도 <−2,−2,2>=−2<1,1,−1>\left< -2,-2,2\right>=-2\left< 1,1,-1\right> 이므로 두 직선은 평행하다. 게다가 점 <3,2,−2>=<3,2,−2>+0<−2,−2,2>=<2,1,−1>+1<1,1,−1>\left< 3,2,-2\right>=\left< 3,2,-2\right>+0\left< -2,-2,2\right> =\left< 2,1,-1\right>+1\left< 1,1,-1\right> 은 두 직선 위에 모두 놓인다. 따라서 두 직선은 만날 뿐만 아니라 일치한다. 점 (3,2,−2)(3,2,-2) 를 지나고 <1,1,−1>\left< 1,1,-1\right> 에 평행한 평면은 모두 두 직선을 포함한다. 일반적으로 평면 ax+by+cz=dax+by+cz=d 가 (3,2,−2)(3,2,-2) 를 지날 필요충분조건은 d=3a+2b−2cd=3a+2b-2c 이고, <1,1,−1>\left< 1,1,-1\right> 에 평행할 필요충분조건은 <a,b,c>⋅<1,1,−1>=a+b−c=0\left< a,b,c\right>\cdot\left< 1,1,-1\right>=a+b-c=0 이다. 따라서 (둘 다 0은 아닌) 임의의 aa, bb 에 대해 ax+by+(a+b)z=aax+by+(a+b)z=a 가 조건을 만족한다.

(a) Note that the value of the parameter tt in the equation <x,y,z>=<−3,2,4>+t<−4,2,1>\left< x,y,z\right> = \left< -3,2,4\right>+t\left< -4,2,1\right> need not have the same value as the parameter tt in the equation <x,y,z>=<2,1,2>+t<1,1,−1>\left< x,y,z\right> = \left< 2,1,2\right>+t\left< 1,1,-1\right>. So it is much safer to change the name of the parameter in the first equation from tt to ss. In order for a point (x,y,z)(x,y,z) to lie on both lines we need

<−3,2,4>+s<−4,2,1>=<2,1,2>+t<1,1,−1>\left< -3,2,4\right>+s\left< -4,2,1\right> = \left< 2,1,2\right>+t\left< 1,1,-1\right>

or equivalently, writing out the three component equations and moving all ss's and tt's to the left and constants to the right,

−4s−t=52s−t=−1s+t=−2\begin{aligned} -4s -t &= 5\\ 2s -t &= -1\\ s +t &= -2 \end{aligned}

Adding the last two equations together gives 3s=−33s=-3 or s=−1s=-1. Substituting this into the last equation gives t=−1t=-1. Note that s=t=−1s=t=-1 does indeed satisfy all three equations so that <x,y,z>=<−3,2,4>−<−4,2,1>=<1,0,3>\left< x,y,z\right>=\left< -3,2,4\right>-\left< -4,2,1\right>=\left< 1,0,3\right> lies on both lines. Any plane that contains the two lines must be parallel to both direction vectors <−4,2,1>\left< -4,2,1\right> and <1,1,−1>\left< 1,1,-1\right>. So its normal vector must be perpendicular to them, i.e. must be parallel to <−4,2,1>×<1,1,−1>=<−3,−3,−6>=−3<1,1,2>\left< -4,2,1\right>\times\left< 1,1,-1\right>=\left< -3,-3,-6\right>=-3\left< 1,1,2\right>. The plane must contain (1,0,3)(1,0,3) and be perpendicular to <1,1,2>\left< 1,1,2\right>. Its equation is <1,1,2>⋅<x−1,y,z−3>=0\left< 1,1,2\right>\cdot\left< x-1,y,z-3\right>=0 or x+y+2z=7x+y+2z=7. This can be checked by verifying that <−3,2,4>+s<−4,2,1>\left< -3,2,4\right>+s\left< -4,2,1\right> and <2,1,2>+t<1,1,−1>\left< 2,1,2\right>+t\left< 1,1,-1\right> obey x+y+2z=7x+y+2z=7 for all ss and tt respectively.

(b) In order for a point (x,y,z)(x,y,z) to lie on both lines we need

<−3,2,4>+s<−4,2,1>=<2,1,−1>+t<1,1,−1>\left< -3,2,4\right>+s\left< -4,2,1\right> = \left< 2,1,-1\right>+t\left< 1,1,-1\right>

or equivalently, writing out the three component equations and moving all ss's and tt's to the left and constants to the right,

−4s−t=52s−t=−1s+t=−5\begin{aligned} -4s -t &= 5\\ 2s -t &= -1\\ s +t &= -5 \end{aligned}

Adding the last two equations together gives 3s=−63s=-6 or s=−2s=-2. Substituting this into the last equation gives t=−3t=-3. However, substituting s=−2, t=−3s=-2,\ t=-3 into the first equation gives 11=511=5, which is impossible. The two lines do not intersect. In order for two lines to lie in a common plane and not intersect, they must be parallel. So, in this case no plane contains the two lines.

(c) In order for a point (x,y,z)(x,y,z) to lie on both lines we need

<−3,2,4>+s<−2,−2,2>=<2,1,−1>+t<1,1,−1>\left< -3,2,4\right>+s\left< -2,-2,2\right> = \left< 2,1,-1\right>+t\left< 1,1,-1\right>

or equivalently, writing out the three component equations and moving all ss's and tt's to the left and constants to the right,

−2s−t=5−2s−t=−12s+t=−5\begin{aligned} -2s -t &= 5\\ -2s -t &= -1\\ 2s +t &= -5 \end{aligned}

The first two equations are obviously contradictory. The two lines do not intersect. Any plane containing the two lines must be parallel to <1,1,−1>\left< 1,1,-1\right> (and hence automatically parallel to <−2,−2,2>=−2<1,1,−1>\left< -2,-2,2\right>=-2\left< 1,1,-1\right>) and must also be parallel to the vector from the point (−3,2,4)(-3,2,4), which lies on the first line, to the point (2,1,−1)(2,1,-1), which lies on the second. The vector is <5,−1,−5>\left< 5,-1,-5\right>. Hence the normal to the plane is <5,−1,−5>×<1,1,−1>=<6,0,6>=6<1,0,1>\left< 5,-1,-5\right>\times\left< 1,1,-1\right>=\left< 6,0,6\right>=6\left< 1,0,1\right>. The plane perpendicular to <1,0,1>\left< 1,0,1\right> containing (2,1,−1)(2,1,-1) is <1,0,1>⋅<x−2,y−1,z+1>=0\left< 1,0,1\right>\cdot\left< x-2,y-1,z+1\right>=0 or x+z=1x+z=1.

(d) Again the two lines are parallel, since <−2,−2,2>=−2<1,1,−1>\left< -2,-2,2\right>=-2\left< 1,1,-1\right>. Furthermore the point <3,2,−2>=<3,2,−2>+0<−2,−2,2>=<2,1,−1>+1<1,1,−1>\left< 3,2,-2\right>=\left< 3,2,-2\right>+0\left< -2,-2,2\right> =\left< 2,1,-1\right>+1\left< 1,1,-1\right> lies on both lines. So the two lines not only intersect but are identical. Any plane that contains the point (3,2,−2)(3,2,-2) and is parallel to <1,1,−1>\left< 1,1,-1\right> contains both lines. In general, the plane ax+by+cz=dax+by+cz=d contains (3,2,−2)(3,2,-2) if and only if d=3a+2b−2cd=3a+2b-2c and is parallel to <1,1,−1>\left< 1,1,-1\right> if and only if <a,b,c>⋅<1,1,−1>=a+b−c=0\left< a,b,c\right>\cdot\left< 1,1,-1\right>=a+b-c=0. So, for arbitrary aa and bb (not both zero) ax+by+(a+b)z=aax+by+(a+b)z=a works.

First observe that

  • <1,1,0>\left< 1,1,0\right> is perpendicular to x+y=0x+y=0 and hence to the line, and
  • <1,−1,2>\left< 1,-1,2\right> is perpendicular to x−y+2z=0x-y+2z=0 and hence to the line.

Consequently

<x−2,y+1,z+1>=t<1,−1,−1>\left< x-2,y+1,z+1\right>= t\left< 1,-1,-1\right>

The scalar parametric equations for the line are

(b) For the point Q(a,b,c)Q(a, b, c)

(a) 직선 LL 이 xyxy평면과 만나는 점은 x+y+z=6x + y + z = 6, x−y+2z=0x - y + 2z = 0, 그리고 z=0z=0 을 만족한다. z=0z=0 일 때 LL 의 방정식은 x+y=6x + y = 6, x−y=0x - y = 0 으로 간단해진다.

  • 직선이 y=zy=z 에 평행해야 하므로, d\mathbf{d} 는 y=zy=z 의 법선벡터 <0,1,−1>\left< 0,1,-1\right> 에 수직이어야 한다.
  • 또한 d\mathbf{d} 는 LL 에도 수직이어야 한다. 점 (x,y,z)(x,y,z) 가 LL 위에 있으려면 x+y=6−zx+y = 6-z 와 x−y=−2zx-y =-2z 를 만족해야 한다. 이 두 식을 더하면 2x=6−3z2x=6-3z 이고, 첫째 식에서 둘째 식을 빼면 2y=6+z2y= 6+z 이다. 따라서 점 (x,y,z)(x,y,z) 가 LL 위에 있으려면 x=3−3z2x=3-\frac{3z}{2}, y=3+z2y=3+\frac{z}{2} 를 만족해야 한다. LL 위의 점 중 z=0z=0 인 점은 (3,3,0)(3,3,0) 이고 z=2z=2 인 점은 (0,4,2)(0,4,2) 이다. 따라서 <0−3,4−3,2−0>=<−3,1,2>\left< 0-3,4-3,2-0 \right>=\left< -3,1,2 \right> 는 LL 의 방향벡터이다.

그러므로 d\mathbf{d} 는 <0,1,−1>\left< 0,1,-1\right> 과 <−3,1,2>\left< -3,1,2 \right> 모두에 수직이어야 하고, 따라서 다음 벡터의 0이 아닌 상수배이다.

<0,1,−1>×<−3,1,2>=det⁡[ı^ȷ^k^01−1−312]=<3 , 3 , 3>\begin{aligned} \left< 0,1,-1\right> \times \left< -3,1,2 \right> =\det\left[\begin{matrix} \hat{\boldsymbol{\imath}} & \hat{\boldsymbol{\jmath}} & \hat{\mathbf{k}} \\ 0 & 1 & -1 \\ -3 & 1 & 2 \end{matrix}\right] =\left< 3 \,,\, 3 \,,\, 3 \right> \end{aligned}

d=13<3 , 3 , 3>=<1 , 1 , 1>\mathbf{d}=\frac{1}{3}\left< 3 \,,\, 3 \,,\, 3 \right>=\left< 1\,,\,1\,,\,1 \right> 로 택한다. 따라서

<x,y,z>=<10,11,13>+t<1 , 1 , 1>\left< x,y,z\right> = \left< 10,11,13\right> + t \left< 1\,,\,1\,,\,1 \right>

(a) The line LL intersects the xyxy–plane when x+y+z=6x + y + z = 6, x−y+2z=0x - y + 2z = 0, and z=0z=0. When z=0z=0 the equations of LL reduce to x+y=6x + y = 6, x−y=0x - y = 0. So the intersection point is (3,3,0)(3,3,0).

The line LL intersects the xzxz–plane when x+y+z=6x + y + z = 6, x−y+2z=0x - y + 2z = 0, and y=0y=0. When y=0y=0 the equations of LL reduce to x+z=6x + z = 6, x+2z=0x +2z = 0. Substituting x=−2zx=-2z into x+z=6x+z=6 gives −z=6-z=6. So the intersection point is (12,0,−6)(12,0,-6).

The line LL intersects the yzyz–plane when x+y+z=6x + y + z = 6, x−y+2z=0x - y + 2z = 0, and x=0x=0. When x=0x=0 the equations of LL reduce to y+z=6y + z = 6, −y+2z=0-y +2z = 0. Substituting y=2zy=2z into y+z=6y+z=6 gives 3z=63z=6. So the intersection point is (0,4,2)(0,4,2).

(b) Our main job is to find a direction vector d\mathbf{d} for the line.

  • Since the line is to be parallel to y=zy=z, d\mathbf{d} must be perpendicular to the normal vector for y=zy=z, which is <0,1,−1>\left< 0,1,-1\right>.
  • d\mathbf{d} must also be perpendicular to LL. For a point (x,y,z)(x,y,z) to be on LL it must obey x+y=6−zx+y = 6-z and x−y=−2zx-y =-2z. Adding these two equations gives 2x=6−3z2x=6-3z and subtracting the second equation from the first gives 2y=6+z2y= 6+z. So for a point (x,y,z)(x,y,z) to be on LL it must obey x=3−3z2x=3-\frac{3z}{2}, y=3+z2y=3+\frac{z}{2}. The point on LL with z=0z=0 is (3,3,0)(3,3,0) and the point on LL with z=2z=2 is (0,4,2)(0,4,2). So <0−3,4−3,2−0>=<−3,1,2>\left< 0-3,4-3,2-0 \right>=\left< -3,1,2 \right> is a direction vector for LL.

So d\mathbf{d} must be perpendicular to both <0,1,−1>\left< 0,1,-1\right> and <−3,1,2>\left< -3,1,2 \right> and so must be a nonzero constant times

<0,1,−1>×<−3,1,2>=det⁡[ı^ȷ^k^01−1−312]=<3 , 3 , 3>\begin{aligned} \left< 0,1,-1\right> \times \left< -3,1,2 \right> =\det\left[\begin{matrix} \hat{\boldsymbol{\imath}} & \hat{\boldsymbol{\jmath}} & \hat{\mathbf{k}} \\ 0 & 1 & -1 \\ -3 & 1 & 2 \end{matrix}\right] =\left< 3 \,,\, 3 \,,\, 3 \right> \end{aligned}

We choose d=13<3 , 3 , 3>=<1 , 1 , 1>\mathbf{d}=\frac{1}{3}\left< 3 \,,\, 3 \,,\, 3 \right>=\left< 1\,,\,1\,,\,1 \right>. So

<x,y,z>=<10,11,13>+t<1 , 1 , 1>\left< x,y,z\right> = \left< 10,11,13\right> + t \left< 1\,,\,1\,,\,1 \right>

is a vector parametric equation for the line. We can also write this as x=10+tx=10+t, y=11+ty=11+t, z=13+tz=13+t.

Hence the vector <1,3,1>−<0,0,2>=<1,3,−1>\left< 1,3,1\right>-\left< 0,0,2\right>=\left< 1,3,-1\right> joining them, and the direction vector of the line, namely <1,1,1>\left< 1,1,1\right> are both parallel to the plane. So

<1,3,−1>×<1,1,1>=det⁡[ı^ȷ^k^13−1111]=<4,−2,−2>\left< 1,3,-1\right>\times \left< 1,1,1\right> =\det\left[\begin{matrix} \hat{\boldsymbol{\imath}} &\hat{\boldsymbol{\jmath}} &\hat{\mathbf{k}} \\ 1&3&-1 \\ 1&1&1 \end{matrix}\right] = \left< 4,-2,-2\right>

is perpendicular to the plane. As the point (0,0,2)(0,0,2) is on the plane and the vector <4,−2,−2>\left< 4,-2,-2\right> is perpendicular to the plane, the equation of the plane is

4(x−0)−2(y−0)−2(z−2)=0 or 2x−y−z=−24(x-0)-2(y-0)-2(z-2)=0\text{ or } 2x-y-z=-2
