Give a function with the properties that:
but for all , .

Since is differentiable for all , then is also continuous for all . If were continuous on the closed interval , then the MVT would guarantee for some ; however, this is not the case. So, it must be that is continuous for all , but not for all .
Since for , that means is constant on that interval. So, is a function like this:

where the height of the constant function can be anything.
So, one possible answer is .
How many roots does the function have?
By inspection, we see is a root of . The question now is whether there could possibly be other roots. Since is differentiable over all real numbers, if there is another root , then by Rolle's Theorem, for some strictly between and . However, is never zero. So, there is no second root: has precisely one root.
How many roots does the function have?

The function is continuous and differentiable over all real numbers. If and are distinct roots of , then for some strictly between and (Rolle's Theorem). So, let's think about . This is simple enough that we can find its zero explicitly: Hence only when . That the derivative only has a single zero is very useful. It means (via Rolle's theorem) that if has distinct roots and with , then we must have . This also means that cannot have 3 distinct roots and (say) with , because then Rolle's theorem would imply that would have two zeros — one between and and another between and .
We've learned that has at most two roots, and we've learned something about where those roots can exist, if there are indeed two of them. But that means could have 0, 1, or 2 roots.
It's not easy to find a root of by inspection. But we can get a good enough picture of the graph of to tell exactly how many roots there are, just by exploiting the following properties of and .
This means the function must look something like the graph below:

except we are unsure of the locations of the -intercepts. At present we only know that one is to the left of and one is to the right.
Note what happens to as increases from strongly negative values to strongly positive values.
So must have exactly two roots, one with and one with .
How many roots does the function have?

So, if , then or . If , then
That is, there is no with . Therefore, following our last bullet point, has only one root.
Note here that has many zeroes — infinitely many, in fact. However, is the only root of in the interval .
How many positive-valued solutions does the equation have?

We are to find the number of positive solutions to the equation . The figure below contains the graphs of and . The solutions to are precisely the 's where and cross.

It sure looks like there is exactly one crossing with and that one crossing is somewhere between and . Indeed since and and is continuous, the intermediate value theorem guarantees that there is at least one root with .
We still have to show that there is no second root — even if our graphs are not accurate.
Recall that the range of the cosine function is . If , then , so . So, we only need to search for roots of on the interval : we are guaranteed there are no roots elsewhere. Over this interval, , so , and thus . Since has no roots in , we conclude by Rolle's Theorem that has at most one root in (and so at most one positive root total). Since we've already found that a root of exists in , we conclude has precisely one positive-valued solution.
Find the point promised by the Mean Value Theorem for the function on the interval .
Write . Since is continuous and differentiable, the Mean Value Theorem asserts that there exists some between and such that
Let . What is the largest interval containing over which is one–to–one? What are the domain and range of ?
If is one–to–one over an interval, it never takes the same value for two distinct numbers in that interval. By Rolle's Theorem, if for distinct and , then for some between and . However, , which is never zero. In fact, for all , so is strictly increasing over its entire domain. Therefore, our function never takes the same value twice, so it is one–to–one over all the real numbers, .
When we define the inverse function , the domain of is the range of , and vice-versa. In general, we might have to restrict the domain of (and hence the range of ) to an interval where is one–to–one, but in our case, this isn't necessary. So, the range of is and the domain of is the range of : .
