The temperature in Celsius in a 3 m long rod at a point metres from the left end of the rod is given by the function . Determine the average temperature in the rod.
By definition, the average temperature is We don't see an obvious substitution, but integrand is a rational function. The degree of the numerator is strictly less than the degree of the denominator, so we factor the denominator and use a partial fraction decomposition.

By definition, the average value is:
The carbon dioxide concentration in the air at a particular location over one year is approximated by parts per million, where is measured in hours.
(a) What is the average carbon dioxide concentration for that location for that year? (b) What is the average over the first day? (c) Suppose measurements were only made at noon every day: that is, when , where is any whole number between 0 and 364. Then the daily variation would cease: . So, the approximation for the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere might be given as What is the relative error in the yearly average concentration of carbon dioxide involved in using , instead of ?
You may assume a day has exactly 24 hours, and a year has exactly 8760 hours.
Before we start answering questions, let's look at our function a little more carefully. The term has a period of 24 hours, while the term has a period of one year. So, the former term describes a standard daily variation, while the latter gives a seasonal variation over the year.
(a) Using the definition of an average, the average concentration over one year ( to ) is:
Remark: for the portions of the integral in red and blue, we also could have noticed that the integrand goes through a whole (integer) number of periods. For every period, the net signed area between the curve and the -axis is zero, so we could have seen from the very beginning these terms would contribute 0 to the final average.
(b) Using the definition of an average, the average concentration over the first day ( to ) is:
Remark: . The red term comes from the daily variation, and over the first day this will have an average of 0. The blue term comes from the seasonal variation, which changes dramatically over the course of an entire year but won't change very much over the course of a single day. So, it is reasonable that the average concentration over the first day should be close to (but not exactly) ppm.
(c) The average of over is:
Since the average of was 400, this gives us an absolute error of ppm, for a relative error of or 12.5%.
That is: sampling at the same time every day, rather than throughout the day, lead to an error of 12.5% in the yearly average concentration of carbon dioxide.

(a) The function only gives us information about an integral when one limit of integration is zero. We can get around this by using properties of definite integrals from Section 1.2 to break our integral into two integrals, each of which has 0 as one limit of integration.
This seems like it might be true: if is getting closer and closer to zero, as grows towards infinity, then over time the later values will become a larger and larger portion of the total interval we're looking at, and so the average should look more and more like when is large–that is, like 0. That's some intuition to start us out, but it isn't a rigorous argument. To be sure we haven't overlooked something, let's use the definition of an average to express .
So, the statement is true whether converges or not.

Note . So, both parabolas are symmetric about the line , and the -coordinate of the centroid is .

The parabolas meet when:
At both these points, , so we see the figure is symmetric about the line . Then the -coordinate of the centroid is .

Therefore, the centroid is at .

Using symmetry, find the centroid of the region inside the unit circle, centred on the origin, and outside a rectangle, also centred on the origin, with width 1 and height 0.5.

The circle and the cut-out rectangle are symmetric about the -axis, and about the -axis, so the centroid is the origin.

For each picture below, determine whether the centre of mass is to the left of, to the right of, or along the line , or whether there is not enough information to tell. The shading of a region indicates density: darker shading corresponds to a denser area. In part (d), the right hand side of the right hand rectangle has .

(a) If we were to set this figure on a pencil lined up along the vertical line , it seems pretty clear that it would fall to the left. So, the centre of mass is to the left of the line . The same is true in (b): the added density on the left makes it only more lopsided. However, in (c), the right side is denser than the left, which could counterbalance the left. Without knowing more about the dimensions and the density, we can't say where the centre of mass is in relation to the line .
(d) Consider a section of the figure, consisting of all points in the figure with , and its “mirror" section on the other side of the line . These two sections, which are drawn in red in the sketches below, will have the same area, at the same distance from . Since we only care about the -coordinate of the centre of mass, it doesn't matter that the two halves are at different -coordinates. The centre of mass falls along the line .

(e) There is the same amount of area to the left and right of the line , as in part (d). However, the area to the right is “stretched out" more, so that it occupies space farther away from the line . So, the centre of mass will be to the right of the line .

(a) To find mass we slice the rod horizontally into uniform slices of length and approximate the density on the th slice with the constant density . Then the approximate mass of the th slice is . Adding the approximations and taking the limit as the number of slices goes to infinity gives us the definite integral to represent the mass of the rod. Using the substitution and we have So if the mass is g, then , so , and . It follows that , and thus, . (b) Since the density is a decreasing function, we should expect that the center of mass of the rod will lie to the left of the midpoint. (c) To find the center of mass, we slice the rod horizontally into uniform slices of length and approximate the mass on the th slice with the constant density to be as in (a). The position of the th slice is approximately . Treating the rod as a collection of discrete masses (the slices), the center of mass is approximately Letting the number of slices go to infinity gives us the exact location of the center of mass of the rod, The mass of the rod is g, so now we just need to evaluate . Integrating by parts with , , , and gives us So the center of mass is , which is less than midway across the cm rod as expected. (d) Each piece would have mass grams. Let be a value of between 0 and so the the mass of the rod on the interval is 15. Using the substitution and we have that the mass of the rod on the interval is We want this mass to be grams, so we find such that . Solving for in the usual way, we find cm. Note that this is not the same as the center of mass. The center of mass takes into account the torque (determined by distance from the center of mass), which is not incorporated into the calculation of the point to split the object into two pieces of equal mass.

(a) To find the mass of the first bar, we use the fact that , with and . Thus, the mass of the first bar is so . Similar computations for the second bar shows that its mass is so . (b) To find the center of mass of each bar, we use the standard formula: Having already evaluated the denominator for each mass distribution, we simply need to compute the numerator. It is straightforward to show that so the first bar's center of mass is For the second bar, so its center of mass is (c) Consider a new 10 cm bar whose mass density function is . (i) The mass of this new bar is . Using the additive property of the definite integral, (ii) Applying the same idea to , we have (iii) False. The center of mass of the new bar is while the average of the two bars' centers of mass is Although the computations prove the conclusion, the result is also intuitive: the average treats the two bars as equal contributors and doesn't take into account that one bar has much more mass than the other. Indeed, a weighted average is needed to correctly compute the center of mass, which is what our earlier computations in (i) and (ii) accomplish.

The plot shown above (with the curve reflected across the -axis to generate the solid of revolution) shows why this solid of revolution is a reasonable approximation to a baseball bat (if perhaps a bit thin between and .
(b) We use the disk method to find the volume of the solid of revolution. In the usual way, the volume of a typical slice is
and thus using a definite integral to sum the volumes of the slices, we get
Using technology to evaluate the integral, we find that cubic inches.
(c) Given that the bat has (constant) weight density ounces per cubic inch, it follows that the total weight of the bat is ounces.
(d) If we slice the baseball bat perpendicular to the horizontal axes, we get thin cylindrical disks as cross-sections. At a given -location, the amount of weight concentrated there is approximately the weight density ( ounces per cubic inch) times the volume of the slice, which is . Thus, we see that the amount of weight concentrated at a location along the bat is given by , which we can therefore view as being the weight density function for how the weight of the baseball bat is distributed from to .
(e) Even though we are dealing with “weight” instead of “mass”, we can compute the center of mass in the usual way since weight differs from mass only by the gravitational constant, and this constant is present in both the numerator and denominator of the center of mass. Thus, using the standard formula,
so
so the center of mass is just over 2/3 along the length of the bat.

Consider the curve and the portion of its graph that lies in the first quadrant between the -axis and the first positive value of for which . Let denote the region bounded by this portion of , the -axis, and the -axis. Assume that and are each measured in feet.
(a) Picture the coordinate axes rotated degrees clockwise so that the positive -axis points straight down, and the positive -axis points to the right. Suppose that is rotated about the axis to form a solid of revolution, and we consider this solid as a storage tank. Suppose that the resulting tank is filled to a depth of feet with water weighing pounds per cubic foot. Find the amount of work required to lower the water in the tank until it is feet deep, by pumping the water to the top of the tank. (b) Again picture the coordinate axes rotated 90 degrees clockwise so that the positive -axis points straight down, and the positive -axis points to the right. Suppose that , together with its reflection across the -axis, forms one end of a storage tank that is 10 feet long. Suppose that the resulting tank is filled completely with water weighing pounds per cubic foot. Find a formula for a function that tells the amount of work required to lower the water by feet. (c) Suppose that the tank described in (b) is completely filled with water. Find the total force due to hydrostatic pressure exerted by the water on one end of the tank.

(a) First, we construct a picture of the tank as described. Below we see a sketch of in the setting where the positive -axis points down; note that this function first crosses the -axis at about . We reflect the curve from the first quadrant across the positive -axis to generate a solid of revolution. Cross-sections perpendicular to the -axis have thickness and are circular disks.
We now suppose that the resulting tank is filled to a depth of feet with water weighing pounds per cubic foot. Since the bottom of the tank is at , being full to a depth of feet means that there is water from to . To find the work done to pump the water until feet remain in the tank (i.e. to a level where ), we have to first find the weight of a typical slice, which requires us to know the volume of such a slice. Observe that for a slice at depth ,
Since water weighs pounds per cubic foot, the weight (and thus force to be exerted) of such a slice is
Finally, the work done to pump such a slice to the top of the tank requires the slice to move units, and thus work for that slice is
To find the total work accomplished, we use a definite integral to sum the work done on each slice from (the top of the water when the tank is initially full to feet) to (the height of the water after foot has been emptied). Thus,
Evaluating the integral, we find foot-pounds.
(b) If instead we envision the tank not as a solid of revolution but as a trough, where the two-dimensional figure above forms one end of a tank that is 10 feet long, we now have a similar problem but with slices that are thin rectangular slabs, rather than thin cylindrical disks. Note that each such slice is wide, feet long, and thick. Thus, for a slice at depth ,
Since water weighs pounds per cubic foot, the weight (and thus force to be exerted) of such a slice is
Finally, the work done to pump such a slice to the top of the tank requires the slice to move units, and thus work for that slice is
Assuming that the tank is completely full, to lower the tank by feet, we consider slices from to , and thus using a definite integral to sum the work required for each slice, we find that the total work is
(c) For the trough described in (b), we now seek to find the total hydrostatic force on one of the ends of the tank when it is completely full. First, we note that a typical slice at location will be at a depth of feet below the water and have area
At any point on this slice, which again lies at depth , the pressure exerted is
since pressure is the weight density of water times depth. Finally, since , the total force water is exerting on this slice is
Integrating to sum the total force, we find that
pounds.
